So 2 days before Christmas 2015 my Dad bought me a Peugeot Speedfight 3 12 plate from this local guy, and we got there, the bike was is horrible condition and it also kept cutting out on us when we went to view it (we thought most probably the carb as it had been sat for 6 months+ and ran on the old fuel). Got the price from £800 to £450. Not bad eh?

Over Christmas and New Year we've been doing it up, e.g. hiding scratches, cleaning panels, cleaning carb and other little bits and pieces it needed doing. Our last piece of the jigsaw was the indicator switch which we bought a new one, and fitted it. We run the bike for a solid 10 minutes with different force on the throttle, and it didn't cut out once, as before we cleaned the carburettor it kept cutting off. We decide to take it out on the road to see if our magic has come back to life.

We get down the drive. Everything seems fine and my dad drives it down the road. To our luck the bike cut out at the top of the road and the revs would not increase and the bike its self kept cutting out. We get it back up the driveway and put it on the stand. We rev and everything seems fine, we raise the stand and then rev some more, the back wheel spins well and nothing seems wrong until it is back on the road, where it cuts out. Also sounds like there is a stone cutter going off, but not as harsh sounding but my dad said that's nothing to worry about.

My dad took it yesterday into the Motorbike repair guy in the area, hopefully I'll hear something back tomorrow or Thursday. Can anyone give any ideas as to what I will be expecting from the Repair guy and will it be costly? Just hope she is okay as I've been waiting over a month to ride her and it was a birthday present (but the insurance left a hole in my pocket Confused )

Sounds like fuel starvation. It doesn't take much fuel to run the engine with no load but as soon as you make it work hard by carrying you down the road the fuel demand is higher. Clean the carb again. Check that fuel runs freely from the tank to the carb whilst you're at it. If it has a in-line filter, change it.

Cheers for your help. We cleaned the carb fully and made sure that the fuel runs from the tank to the carb fine and it did, dont know what the problem could be really

Did you change the oil?
What was the old oil like?

You do know that there is 4 stroke oil in the gearbox and 2 stroke oil in a completely separate container for the fuel/crank part which is sacrificial?

I bet the last owner didn't either....

It was put in where it should be, don't worry. Old 2 stroke oil out and new 2 stroke oil in. It was put in the separate container for the fuel/crank part.

In that case, you were looking at the wrong oil for the question. The condition of the oil in the gearbox section is important. Any smell of petrol, for example, would indicate a blown seal on the crank.

And your mechanic is a twat. 2T oil is 2T oil. It's sacrificial. It doesn't go off.

Mineral oils are often many millions of years old and are still fresh.

Not had a look at the 4 Stroke oil to be honest. All I wanted to know was what the problems may be and will they be expensive for him to fix? He hasn't got back to me as I only sent the bike in Monday so i'm expecting a phone call any time soon

Wrong.

It's a scooter. The gearbox is dry. The final drive has 80w90 oil in it and the crank seals are only lubricated by the 2stroke mix.

Petrol cannot leak into the final drive oil.

The mechanic got back to us and said that it is probably the jets which are too small and not allowing enough fuel through, and that we need a new rectifier regulator due to the battery not staying charged for long. Not very costly but I hope that is what the problem is and not something bigger:)

Sounds like he's FOS. Did he even measure the charging output? I bet five ponds that it's just a battery you need because it's been stood flat too long.

Well before we took it into him we put a fully charged battery in and within an hour it had gone dead. But the bike wouldn't move much and was bogging out if accelerated. He's probably right, needs a new regulator rectifier and bigger jets.

You've recently been running the bike for short periods of time, not enough to charge a battery up so it could just be that it needs a good charge and a good run and nothing wrong with electrics.

Even the mechanic noticed it before we even told him, so I think there may be a problem with the rectifier regulator :/

Thanks mate, will hopefully hear something tomorrow to see if the jets were the cause of the problem. I haven't had a look on any other forum apart from this one and TMBF.

It's tricky to diagnose such things over the internet, because you (and we) don't know the starting point. It's a scooter, there is a high probability that someone has messed with it in the past. This means that the following should be considered:
1. It has a bore kit.
2. The carb settings are all wrong.
3. The rollers are the wrong weight.

In order to diagnose, we need to know what has been messed with. The usual starting point to find a problem is to clean the fuel system, change the spark plug, charge or replace the battery, and set everything back to standard.
