PostPosted: 22:46 - 09 Feb 2016    Post subject: hazard perception on theory test Reply with quote

Been looking to finally do my car license after 10 years of commuting daily on my bikes, so thought id start with the theory test again. I've already passed it twice before and spend everyday for the past 10 years riding without incident but for some reason im supposed to do it again because dvsa Rolling Eyes .

Anyways, just done a practice hazard perception test and only just scraped through. i even got disqualified from 1 clip for seeing too many hazards Confused . things like a car waiting at a junction or 2 young lads walking side by side on a footpath is a hazard in my eyes but not according to dvsa.

I can only assume i saw a few of them too early and missed the scoring window. As a lot of you will know, staying alive on a bike requires a lot of hazard perception, which seems to render this test pretty useless.

It seems to be just a case of knowing how to play the game and serves no real purpose at all as a test of competence.

Yeah you get done for over-clicking or something. The hazard perception test is a bloody mess, and has little bearing on your ability to percieve hazards in the real world. You passed, job jobbed Thumbs Up

It's a crap test. I think you may be right about clicking too early. I failed it on the hazard test.

When I did it again clicked when I saw the hazard and a second click a little after and passed.

It's complete nonsense.

I got a worse score when I did my car one after two years of riding.

I'd agree with monkeybiker on the two-click method and also just get a CD/online test and practice loads of them. It's all you can do really.

Good luck, you'll need it Laughing

Just booked the earliest slot i can which is in 3 weeks so i have plenty of time to practice i guess.

for those who have done it recently, how does the car test compare to the bike test difficulty wise?
i passed my bike test when it was just 1 test so the same format as the car test really and didnt find it too difficult, but i had been riding bikes from a young age and spent a few years on a 125 before so the riding part didnt require much thought.

For a remotely experienced driver, the hazard perception test can be a challenge to pass. When I went for my bike test after years of experience in a car and an IAM certificate, I completely flunked my hazard perception test.

The key for me was distinguishing between a potential hazard, and a hazard. Any experienced driver will see the dog off a lead, or the child playing with a ball next to the road, or the car starting to reverse out of a driveway, and see this as a hazard. Apparently the DVSA doesn't believe those are hazards, they're "emerging hazards".

On my second attempt at the theory test I managed to pass by only clicking when the dog/ball/car had come into the road.

Extremely pointless, but there we go.

I clicked early a lot too when practicing. Got in the habit of doing a second click just after just in case.

did mine a couple of weeks ago

in the test centre now its computer generated videos and its a lot easier then on the practice discs at home

mind you I managed to pass on a 17" monitor at home so some hazards were still invisible on the screen

The test is aimed at allowing blind spongos to pass it by clicking just before "impact".

It penalises competence.

This is a fact that you simply have to deal with. Treat it as a game.

Arrow Click when you should take action. This will be too early.
Pause 1 second.
Arrow Click at the point where DVSA might conceivably allow you to notice the hazard.
Pause 1 second.
Arrow Click a third time before "impact" just to be sure.

Your score doesn't matter, just that you pass.

I did my car one first, an thought the bike one was easier - I failed my car one first time around

When I resat it, the examiner told us all not to just "machine gun it" an just do steady clicks

I did this on my bike one an passed

Hope this kinda helps?

In the competent world, the videos are full of potential hazards. Test expects you to click when you have no choice but to swerve hard or stand on brakes and prey for abs.

That dont look good, i should slow down and move out to pass that parked van (dont click)
(Mississippi )
imma bit close to that van and the driver is moving around (click) this is when a competent rider evades
Van door in path ! (click) this is when they expect you click
(Missouri?)
(Click) in case last click was premature.

Its worth remembering that the hazard perception test defines a hazard as something that causes you to change your speed or direction. People walking on the pavement aren't (under this definition) a hazard until they step into the road for example. So keep aware of these things, but only click when the hazard develops. You get scored based on how early you recognise that the hazard is developing.

Over-clicking or clicking in a pattern is what gets you disqualified, since you can cheat the test by doing this. Try not to be too liberal with your clicks.

I downloaded the hazard perception app onto my phone, which has 10 clips to practice, as well as commentary up front about how the test works. Its worth getting for £2

The test is nonsense and just way of extracting more money from you as far as I can see. Click once when you first see a hazard developing, wait a second, click again, wait a second and click a third time. That seems to be the strategy. If you spot the hazard too early you will miss the scoring 'window' and get nothing.

I got disqualified one one of my clips but still managed to pass biggest problem was thinking I was clicking too early as on my practice program I was always getting 0 for clicking too early even though it was the right time, ended up teaching my self to click 3 times and it got me in trouble but I still passed. I don't know how much truth there is to this but I herd that you are allowed 7 clicks before you get disqualified

IIRC, i missed a hazard by clicking to early and not reclicking on one, and got full marks on all the others. Massively above the pass threshold.

Some usefull tips there cheers Thumbs Up

I've downloaded the hazard perception app and it shows where you clicked in relation to the scoring zone and i do seem to always click to early. Started clicking a second or two after seeing a hazard and im almost at full score now so think ive sussed it.

On a side note. Does anyone know the rules regarding usimg a motorway as a learner? From what I can see it says learners cant use motorways. Are the rules the same if you already have a full license in another catagory? As ive been using motorways in the uk and all over europe for years. It seems a bit daft that im not deemed safe because its a car not a bike..the only difference is I cant filter in a car so if anything im over qualified haha

No, you can't use motorways. Nice try though. Laughing

License vs provisional is per vehicle category. If you could ignore the learner restrictions for bikes because you have a license in another category then you could also take a pillion and wouldn't need to display L plates either.

Aah well..just thought it was a possible loophole as I have a mate who would probably add me to his insurance if I could share the motorway miles. Just to get abit of time behind the wheel to get me used to using the clutch, throttle and brakes with the wrong end of my body

I was wasted when I done mine.
Just had part of a lung removed a while before, was kind of out my tree on painkillers at the time.

Motorway on anything sensible: cry havoc and unleash the engine om the sliproad, speedmatch with traffic, shoulder check, merge, change up, do lane change malarkey once or twice, head down. Realise it's a bit buzzy, find the rarest of all things, 6th gear. Watch for cops and speed cameras. Try not to fall asleep. Do lane change drill again when approaching desired exit until on sliproad. Change down. Not missing a lot.

Motorway on 125: Pin throttle and hope. Get overtaken and tailgated by HGVs. Become small mobile roadblock and danger to self.
