Have gone under. All their stock and workshop stuff is going to be auctioned off.
Shame, there were possibly the only dealers I have ever trusted.

Quote:
We are sorry to share this news, it’s not the outcome we would have wished for. Due to illness and a protracted period of challenging trading conditions the business has become unsustainable.

“To protect the interest of its creditors and the six remaining members of staff who are regrettably facing redundancy, we have reluctantly decided to enter the company into voluntary administration.

“For almost 55 years Granby Motors has been Ilkeston’s premier destination for motorcyclists and we’d like to take this opportunity to thanks our loyal supporters, without whom none of it would have been possible.

“Thank you to all of our suppliers and friends in the motorcycles trade and to all the staff over the years who helped make Granby Motors one of the biggest independent motorcycle dealers in the UK. We acknowledge particularly the persistence and loyalty of the current team in rather less salubrious and often difficult circumstances.

“Thanks especially to all of our customers for making our store number one. We could not have made it without your loyalty and support.

“For better or worse it’s been quite a ride. Stay safe and happy biking. Jack, Julie, Howard and Gloria.”

It`s sad that an independent bike dealer goes under, that means we will be more dependant on the big affiliated/franchised dealers who will only work on bikes they sold and are still under warranty Sad

I bought a ZZR400 from them in the late 90's, it broke down in the first day.
The recovered me and the bike, took it back to the workshop fixed a faulty carb and gave me a free heavy duty cover and disc lock as an apology.
Since then if I needed OEM parts I have tried to use them especially as my folks living so close.
They were the fist bike shop I remember going to as a kid and always helpful.
It is a genuine loss to the industry that they are now gone.

Sad, they used to sponsor a load of local lads in racing, suppose they couldn't compete with cheaper is better fuck customer service mantra we have now.

Speaking of dealers going under, I have heard a rumour that the Kawasaki place in Swadlincote, Bikers Motorcycles, might also be shutting up shop. Anyone else heard anything to that effect? If true, it may also affect the one at Clay Cross.

They had 55 years at it, not sure why it wasnt sold as a going concern if they were still doing it right,
They never took to online and this ultimately cost them imo,
I have to say the staff there didn't have a smile between them when you spoke to them,
You always got the feeling you were stepping back into the 80s in there.

I was sad enough when they shut the branch in nearby Beeston - had some work done there on my old scooter years ago.

It's a shame to see independents going under.

Maybe they weren't. It's been a tough few years, and despite sales picking up last year, it'd be easy for a business to have run up big debts and the bank to have called time.

Having been in a couple of companies that went out of business, it rarely ends up all fair and square with nobody owed anything. It'll be a blessing if all the bikes being auctioned off actually belong to the business. Recall:

My brother had been using them for a few years, but went to book his bike in for some mechanical work a few times, and both times they sent him to a local guy as they were too busy...

I'd be surprised, they seem to be doing quite well from what I've seen, plenty of new bikes getting sold through there. I believe they're a MV Agusta dealer too now.

EDIT: I see that people are struggling to get hold on them on the phone and they're closed. I hope not as they seem like a decent place.

I live close by and used to wander in occasionally and the past few weeks they just haven't given a fuck about the people in the shop. Hopefully they haven't gone though.

Apocryphally at low or no margin. I understand that dealers make their money rinsing us on used bikes and servicing.

Point in case, MCS in Glasgow. Used to have franchises for Kawasaki and Triumph, lost both of them, but are still doing fine. Or Ride-On used to be a Yamaha outfit, sacked that off in favour of titans like Reiju, Kymco, Honley and (yah rly) EBR, but rather than vanishing up their own tailpipe actually expanded and moved to bigger premises.

Hi

Shame Granbys are going. Used them a few years ago for some TZR250 bits and they were helpful.

All the best

Katy

I'm going to guess that they went too big too quick. Ten years (or so) ago they had the little shop in West Street and that small unit on Boardman Industrial Estate, they moved a few years later into the bigger all in one place on Boardman and then a couple of years ago they moved into the new place up the road and became the fully fledged Kawasaki dealer. Thrown in the mix somewhere is the Kawasaki dealership that they were part of also in Clay Cross.

As for taking on the MV franchise, well that must be pretty recent, but as far as I'm concerned, Swadlincote is not the kind of place where a main dealer bike shop can really survive, Kawasaki must be hard, but MV is just ludicrous for the area.

It is a shame though, it will leave the area with few independent bike shops, especially since Grippers on Gresley Common closed the other year too.

Too big too quick was what I heard too but I am not familiar with their history. Definitely shut anyways and it seems that the Clay Cross one has gone too.

55 years is hardly "quick".
Looks like they've been lumped with selling budget bikes like many other independants......that must be a nightmare Shocked

It was not my theory, only what I had heard but MattEMulsion's story above suggests a period of rapid and recent growth.

Maybe selling the budget bikes was an attempt to boost sales and stay afloat? It's not like Kawasaki have much presence in the learner market and MV clearly do not either. Plus selling learner bikes might also drum up some business for their in house training school, who I am guessing have also gone.

This thread has drifted into two different closures of two dealers hence any confusion over timelines. Granby's of Ilkeston was trading for 55 years or so, Bikers of Swadlincote was approximately 10 years by my reckoning.
