In my 20s and 30s, I insured all kinds of sports bikes in London.
However, I have just been refused insurance on everything I want ranging from a VFR1200 to a BMW K1300S because of theft. I am looking for a 5 year old bike but literally no company in the UK will insure me.
Comparethemarket, Carole Nash, BMW's insurance company, Honda's insurance company etc... all have turned me down flat.
I have been riding since the 90s, have a full no-claims bonus, no points, am no spring chicken and theoretically, my insurance should be decreasing but it's going the other way. The issue is 'theft' which was significantly less of an issue 20+ years ago.
Insurance companies are refusing to insure me without a brick built garage in Central London.
Has theft become so bad that motorcycles in Central London are now uninsurable? ____________________ FZR400 (blown engine), ZXR750 (blown engine), ZX6R (accident), CBR600 which had engine issues after which I learned to change gear..., CBR900, CBR924 (stolen), CB600, CB1300 (everything blew up), BMW K1300GT (written off, hit from rear while stationary), Bandit 1250 for a couple of months, Triumph Sprint ST 1050 (nicked) and somewhere in there, I wrote off a Ducati 748 at Cadwell. |

On the rare occasion where they do catch some of the thieving scum the courts hand out ridiculously lenient sentences. |
It's a real shame to hear. Ridiculously, we have around 9,500 scoots and bikes stolen per year in London or around 26 per day. This means no insurer will touch me for the 5 year old sports tourers that I want to buy because of thieving scum. 20 years ago, I could buy sports bikes.

The pedboi will put his foot on it and push it along, either to a van or a lock-up. Steering locks are about as effective as a sign saying "please don't steal this bike".

<Trigger warning: vlogger anecdotes>
In contrast, the Met seem to give a stuff. When Royal Jordanian's Nuda got nicked, MetPlod actually turned up sharpish and drove round the area looking for it.
On the other hand, BvG was on about a gang that lifted multiple GSes from the same area in one day, no fucks given.
London, ungaraged? Honestly, I would expect pretty much anything to be at significant risk. So I'd go with buying a hack then giving whatever answers allow getting TPO cover (or TPF&T with no intention of ever claiming) on it. Do bear in mind that if it gets nicked then you'll want to cancel the policy immediately in case they crash it into something, and that "No longer have the bike" is entirely truthful, if not the entire truth. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

And did you watch that GS theft video above? Here it is at the point where two pikeys break the lock in less time than it takes to fingerbang an award winning actress. All of them with no tools other than their rat paws.
If you want to continue to believe otherwise, then I guess ignorance is bliss. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
