Lenovo Thinkcentre Ram?

We run mostly lenovo Thinkcentre pcs here, just upgraded one of them to 8gb from 4gb

when the machine boots, goes through post which mentions ram has increased - ok so far

Gets to Win7 splash screen an throws a wobbler like faulty ram...

Ram that i pulled is Elpida (Lenovo stamped) 2Gb 2Rx8 PC3-10600U-9-10-B0 (x2)

Installed Kingston KVR13N9S8/4 (4Gb PC3-10600 CL9)

What gives man?!

Board supports upto 8gb according to this

Will try an run MemTest see if the new ram is faulty

Would it be 32bit rather than 64bit?
I think you can only have 4GB RAM with that, but I would have expected it would just ignore the extra rather than sulk about it.

It's not the first time this week I hear about RAM compatibility problems. A friend of mine tried 6 different modules before he got one that worked. I've advised my mate to take the back cover off and read the MB serial number, he then got the specific RAM module for his notebook.

And yes, 32bit system will only work with the 3,2Gb of RAM and ignore the rest, but that is not the problem.

With desktops I've never experienced such a problem, you either bought DDR 1, 2, 3, (4) and it worked. With notebooks, there always seems to be a problem with the voltage.

My advice, try different (voltages) RAM modules. Not sure about UK, but in the rest of the EU, the customer has always 14 days to return the merchandise he bought from a retailer, with no questions asked.

Its a PC/ Desktop.

4 available slots, tried 1&2, then 2&3, 1&4 and 4&3 nowt nadda zip!

The thing thats weird is the bios is registering the ram (it states 8gb on post) but its windows that seems to be struggling?

When I upgraded my ThinkPad I had to use the low density RAM sticks. I think was was due to the age of the system/processor but I could be remembering that wrongly!

I initially bought some from Amazon, but when I had the same symptoms as you I went via Crucial and it's worked flawlessly since.

Forgot to add, an easy way to verify this is that the problems persisted with just one of the newer sticks (so essentialy the same amount of RAM as before). This told me that the issue was NOT with the amount of RAM.

Try booting up from a Linux DVD and see if that complains. Also these often have a memory test boot mode.

Is that RAM supported by the motherboard?

If the PC boots past the BIOS I wouldn't expect it to be a compatibility issue.

Have you tired with just one of the 4Gb sticks? Might be a faulty module...
