Do you dread the MOT test?

Just taken the 7 year old ER6 for its MOT with 89000miles on it. They never seem to be a bother and I can't remember the last time I had a bike fail so do you dread the yearly test and if so why?

Nope. The local outfit just batters through it, common sense style, no teeth sucking. 5 minutes start to finish then a bit of a chat.

The only thing they've pulled me up on was an advisory on the Tractor brake pads which was correct and helpful.

The only reason that I can see for dreading an MOT test is if you have something like a rotting exhaust, replacements are like rocking-horse shit and cost a packet when they do turn up, the exhaust studs are all rusty and likely to snap when removing them, you rely on the bike as your daily transport with no alternatives available, and you're skint. Then I might dread MOT time. Nope, never been in that situation

Nope, I normally check the bikes over before they go. I don't bother with the car because it gets a service at the same time (lifetime warranty, yo) and they do the MOT at the end.

If it fails, it fails. Get it fixed and go back later. If I only had one form of transport then I would be a little worried.

My 18 year old Thundercat has only ever had advisories for tyre wear, which I expected when they happened. Other than that it's almost a folly exercise - they should just send me a new one automatically, maybe checking with me all is still OK by text. It makes a metronome look erratic.

No, although for the car they seem to pick advisories at random. It never has the same advisory more than once despite me not fixing it.

Last thing that failed an MOT for me was my GSXR750M about 8 years ago, cause there was no fluid in the rear brake. Other than that not had any issues.

It doesn't worry me, but it's a bit of a pain having that small-ish window of time to get the vehicle to and from a garage.

The last bike I put through I knew the brakes were binding a bit, but the MOT tester was about to go on holiday for a few weeks so shoved it through on the off-chance. It passed, with an advisory. If it had failed it would have been no great shakes.

My car decided that it had a faulty cat the day before the MOT was booked (for first thing Monday) so no chance to sort it. That scraped a pass on the emissions, and was fixed properly a couple of days later.

Not relying on a single vehicle and not being skint helps.


I assume that if an MOT station has a perfect (or higher than average) pass rate that it would come under inspection. In which case we should be thanking the owners of badly maintained machines who fill the fail quota...

bikes and weekend cars no daily driver yes. just spent the past week with a totally dismantled mk2 mondeo on the drive welding, suspension and exhaust system plus lots of other bits. it passed in the end but I don't want to know what I spent on it

Bikes, nope, I'm always happy my bikes will pass.

Cars, I used to check everything but now I CBA. It goes in and if it fails I get them to fix it. I'm not worried about it but if it comes back that the disks need replacing or something similar it can be a bit annoying.

I go to a local car place that happens to do bike mot's, they don't do bike work so I've got no reason to suspect they'd fail it for profit. They've lent me tools to fix it there and then on two occasion when I've failed a test there.

One thing I do dread. My horn invariably fails between leaving home and arriving at the MOT and manages to retain just enough function to emit a barely audible (but constant) death rattle. Has become something of a standing joke now.

My wheel bearings also fail fairly regularly. I checked then just before I left last time I took the bullet in and there was actual play on the rear wheel by the time I arrived. Luckily they are easily changed.

My MOT guy is pretty thorough. He might put something down as an advisory for someone he knows will get it sorted where he might do it as a fail for someone else. He's not over strict and (a rarity these days) doesn't make stuff up off his own back like some do.

He says he's had two inspections in the last two years. They (VOSA) sit around the corner and watch him log a vehicle onto the system. Once it registers a pass and leaves, they stop it, take it back to the station and test it again. Sucks to be the owner and you can't even deferr the test because they are official inspectors.

He was pleased they only found two really minor things. One was iffy headlamp alignment (which was a design issue rather than a setup issue "They're all like that mister") they said should have been an advisory. The other was a missing petrol cap seal. First thing he checks now is the filler cap seal.

I was perhaps a little cocky with last year's MOT. I knew it was going to fail on the front pads which needed changing swiftly, so I bought some new ones and asked the garage to fit them, thinking they'd fail it, fix it and pass it to help their fail stats along.

So the cheeky buggers fitted the pads first, then tested it and failed it because they thought the number plate was a bit too small.

That'll teach me.

It seems to be born out in the replys here that Teflon Mike is right about 'bikes ain't car's.' I've always known this to be true, but perhaps not always at the bottom end of the market with learners and cheap shit daily beaters etc.

If you dread the MOT test, due to having known or suspect machine defects, then you deserve to have a 100mph seizure or your brakes fail on the motorway and potato yourself!

It does make me laugh how anal we all are about the difference in a couple of kg or bhp between say a blade and an R1, where as car drivers will almost never give a shit about the differences between a Golf and a Focus etc, in fact car drivers are like appliance buyers in that most are thick as shit, don't know what they are looking for/at or wouldn't even know which vehicle they were driving unless told etc.
