Bought a project bike, have a fresh topend ready to bolt onto bottom end.
Engine turns freely doesn't feel like there's any play in the crank etc.
Bikes covered 23 k last ran in 2006 is worth rinsing the bottom end out with deisel and bolting it all up together?
Or is there more chance that the crank seal will have failed?
Not sure which way to go,as it's big bucks to rebuild. Rolling Eyes
Any help would be ace Rolling Eyes

If the crank feels good I'd be inclined to put it together and fire it up. You can't really check the seals without rigging up to do a leak down test. Personally I've never known seal issues on a Yam and if they are gone it's not the end of the world.

It's a bit of a bitch to have to re-strip a fresh top end as well as have the rest of the motor out of the frame and stripped down, if the seals hold for 50-200miles though?

If it's not ran for 10 years and especially if the engine was disassembled and left open, then Id expect the seals to be toast, or pretty close to it, unless the motor has been filled up with oil to keep them wet.

I could be wrong and everything might be fine, but it's a bit of a bitch if you find that you need pull the motor out and have it apart in a few 100miles or less if the crank seals go?

Thanks guys, think I'm going to rebuild its a complicated engine with all sorts of cables and stuff around the top end compared to the simple kmx daily ride anyway

Hi

I would probably just drop it in the frame and try it. It is going to be far easier to put in place than to rebuild.

And for a quick check of how it runs you could just avoid connecting the power valve cables (although they are pretty simple to connect up).

All the best

Katy
