A Ghanian lady was surprised to learn that "Gollys are bad because they offend black people" was a common thought in the UK. Well she liked them and found that most black people thought they were cute too.

So now she's set up Gollynomics, a charity that sells Gollys and uses the proceeds to fund agriculture and educational projects in West Africa.

It was never intended to be racist.

The golly, it seems, was not in origin a racist icon, whereas the offensive term ‘wog’ had a separate derivation.
WOG – (Western and Oriental Gentleman) was a term first used in England in the early twentieth century, to denote people who were not white, though deemed to be derogatory and racist.
In 2009, the Doll came to prominence during racial tension in the UK, and got caught up in racial discourse.
Recent academic comment on the work of Enid Blyton claims that golliwogs may have been innocent victims of well-intentioned political correctness when they were banished from revised editions.
Golly is part of black history – and black heritage – and we are reclaiming it. The golly doll is not a racist icon.
Many collectors argue that the Golly is just a child’s toy!

That actually makes it far more amusing to me.

Dug a bit and found:

"UK registered Not For Profit Company, with Charitable Aims"

So is that like a "non-profit" where you earn a healthy salary and chuck a bit of money at Africans each year to justify some tax-breaks?

I had a quick dig starting with Gollynomics. Each company/charity/scam seems to link back to another organisation with charitable overtones Gollynomics - TEWBIT - LAMKOTET - GaDangme Women Development Association - TEF-GAYAK Ghana... and so on.

Well I searched the company number on the TEWBIT website and got:

Admittedly I don't know what I'm actually looking at on a balance sheet but it appears they are making a loss.

Yeah their accounts show a sizeable chunk goes to ghana....

Call me skeptical but the real question is what happens when it gets to "ghana", mostly into the pockets of friends and family I'd expect.... It's not like any regulators can trace it over there....
