Wireless Music Solution

I have been tasked by my parents to sort a wireless music set up for their house, as they are renovating.
I have looked at things like Sonos, but not sure if I can justify the cost. Are there any similar solutions out there which will be better suited, and scalable? (Will need speakers for 3/4 rooms)

They are currently uploading 600 CD's to iTunes and have asked if they should get an iPod or similar to play them from.
I am going to propose a micro server or similar for their main music library.
Does anyone have experience setting one up with a wireless speaker set up. And what do you use as a controller?

They most difficult part is they also want to be able to play from CD's and Vinyl! Is this doable?

Logitech Squeezeboxes are very good.

They stopped making them a few years ago so you'd have to go seconhand/refurbished/old stock.

A micro server or similar for their main music library, alternatively they could just subscribe to Spotify.

I've recently told them of the wonders of Spotify, not sure it will catch on with them though.

My dad has a lot of very niche music anyway so doubt it will meet all of his needs.

Cheers Cansa, I'll look in to it more seriously and check what their budget is.
I assume the Sonos controller can connect to just about anything to get the music library? Does this need to be an App, or do Sonos make some sort of control unit that can be used instead?

I have all my music on my microserver.
Once you show the app where all the media is, it gets added to the sonos library.
This info is stored across all sonos devices, not on the application.

I also stream live radio, and sometimes use speakers for the TV too.

Any plus side to having all the music on a server, rather than say having a dedicated ipod connected at all times?
Other than storage capacity obviously.

If you are after something low maintenance, plug and play, no phone calls from old people then I'd choose itunes and sonos.

The other suggestions in this thread work well, pretty decent etc.
But you need to think who the end user will be.

It would be nice if they could just hit play on what they want to hear, no having to turn things on etc.
If it takes more time, or is more difficult than putting a CD in a player, then they won't use it.

Ripping 600 CDs?

Apart from the obscure old people music they've got which the internet will never have heard of, downloading the albums they've got should be much quicker and easier than ripping them.

I'd still be tempted to give Spotify a go to see what they make of it as it's so much simpler than a micro server for their music library

Cheaper option? If they are using iTunes, why not go with Airplay stuff? Quite a bit cheaper than Sonos but still very slick and well behaved.

I reckon I could try and get them on board with Spotify. But my Dad (the music buff) won't be converted easily

So what I am thinking now is to use the following:

1 x Sonos Play 3 £259
2 x Sonos Play 1 £169
Sonos Connect (to attach either a CD player/turntable) £279
Spotify
(Microserver if they don't take to Spotify )

Starting to get expensive

I will keep researching alternatives though. The main selling point is the Sonos App, being able to control all of the above.

It is pricey, possibly arse twitchingly expensive.
If you can stretch your anus enough to get the Play:5, do it.

Depending on teh model of router they have, you might ba able to chuck a usb hard drive on it and use that to store & share the music.
Saves spending money on a microserver.

These are the available services on sonos kit.
Spotify on Sonos requires a premium spotify account.
My missus prefers Google Music, she's been using it for years on her phone and has all her music uploaded to Google., it has the added bonus of being free

We both have our own Google Music account, and the sonos app doesnt share the content across controller apps.

Sonos is great. Wouldn't be without mine. Play 1's are ample in most rooms and you can stereo pair them

How wireless is wireless?
The setup I'm using is a Sony 5.1 surround sound, inherited from my audiophile father when he upgraded to one with a blu ray player, I use my Pi2 running OSMC through AirPlay. I either play stuff straight from my phone or AirPlay from my iTunes library on my PC.
The only downside is having to connect to it using a 3.5mm connector as that's all the Pi has, but I'm sure expansions are available if required.

This is just stuff that I already had laying around that I've connected up though.

Another +1 for Sonos, my dad has a pretty extensive Sonos setup and it works seamlessly and sounds pretty fantastic.

We have gone with Sonos.

Set them up a Play 1 over the weekend. Will see how much they like it and expand with a Play 5 in a few weeks.
