Warning. Random musings

I hopped on a friends 5th Gen VFR800 earlier, to allow him to hear his new exhaust as a passer by would (to make sure it wasn't too loud). It felt mighty odd. I assume I hit the rev limiter as I felt the bike dip forwards suddenly as I was accelerating. Perhaps it's more planted and I didn't feel the speed, or perhaps the quieter engine (compared to my screaming CBR) isn't as obvious when it wants to change. I've never hit the limiter on my F3 (nor do I usually go anywhere near the redline). It also felt odd when I navigated a slow roundabout, the steering feeling completely different to my bike. Interesting

It's heavier and less peaky than the cbr, horses for courses.

In the short time I was on it, it felt a lot more planted. Judging by how well they're universally received, I think a much longer ride is in order

I've owned an f2 and currently own a vtec, to be fair they're quite similar bikes, I'm not sure there's much to be gained by swapping if that's what you're considering, in fact the vfr is way less economical and servicing costs are astronomical in comparison, at least with the vtec.

The F3 is great for a quick blatt, but I envisage doing more long distance and possibly some intercontinental touring to Spain, most likely 2 up. I get 55-60mpg on the F3 currently, but it's not a relaxing ride at all. Ever Laughing

Which servicing costs are higher?

I'd have a VFR800x in a heartbeat if I wasn't petrified by the 16k miles valve check cost..

That bark at ~6.4k rpm is a beautiful sound..

Said it before, you can happily leave the valve check till 32k if it's giving you no reason to need it and Honda motor-menders all agree.

Heavier bikes do feel more planted, but if a bikes top heavy, or you struggle backpedaling it (like I do being a bit of a weakling Embarassed) then the extra weight can be annoying.

Honda stealer will want 5-600 notes. Average indy garage will do it for 350 give or take. You have to watch for dodgy Derek that will only do the 'normal' valves because he hasn't got the ludicrously expensive super duper special Honda tools required to do the VTEC valves (Which are the pain to do) That said, there is logic in saying that if the normals are in spec the VTECs should be fine since they get used a lot less.

It's worth ringing around and finding one that has the tools and has done one before (Which if they have the lifters then naturally they will have)

It is DIY-able but it's a fucking monster job that takes a couple of days due to the complexity. There's a group on one of the VFR forums that have a loaner kit with shims if you're in the know.

I can't backpedal the CBR as it is so getting off is quite normal for me Laughing

Aye, that's my only memory of a completely uneventful test ride of a 2015 VFR, everything else was just ok.

No. Those models didn't have VTEC so the valve clearance is a piece of piss.

The 5th gen also had gear driven cams. And how the owners of them like to fucking drone on about how spiffing they are and what an utter failure the VTEC is. Which it isn't, at all. You just have automatic cam chain tensioners to deal with every 25k miles or so and it's not that hard, I just did mine last weekend and it took me no more than an hour and 100 quid in parts. Big whoop.

Whilst I'm banging on, it's worth mentioning that I wouldn't buy a 2001-2006 model. They revised the 6th gen (VTEC) in 2006 onwards with a few tweaks, one of the major ones being the VTEC step. On the 'a' model 6th gen it kicks in too low and too harsh, it's distinctly unpleasant and catches you out in awkward moments like ragging out of a bend almost akin to an old fashioned 80's turbo. The 'b' model kicks in higher in the rev ranges and is less pronounced.

Out of the box the VTEC is also a cast iron pig at slow speeds, really shit. The fuelling is all fucked up and the throttle is an on/off switch. You can solve this very easily though by disabling the PAIR valve system. Basically the PAIR injects air into the exhaust system at near idle and that cocks up the O2 sensor/fuelling which goes a bit nuts.

The other thing to do, if you want to throw money at it, is fit a PC5. I did and it smooths everything right out. The VTEC still kicks in nicely but without any drama and still gives that gorgeous V4 howl when you give it the beans.

Aftermarket cans are a must to unleash the V4 soundtrack that everyone falls in love with. I went with Remus and they're bloody lovely but if you can get your hands on them a set of Staintune are considered the holy grail.

Mmm V4.

I have a 1992 750 with a micron can.

I sometimes just like to play with the engine noise.

What are you talking about? I'm short, can barely touch the floor and I was fine on the '98 model earlier, height and weight wise. It felt no different to my CBR in that respect. Technique man Mr. Green

On a sidenote, I tried to convince the owner to go for a 2nd hand Stainetune previously, but he's opted for an MTC one instead. Sounds good at idle, but on the move you can barely hear it, unlike my CBR which screams like a raped ape

Have a look on youtube at 'VFR no exhaust', there's quite a few but that's what a V4 should sound like.

I did it when I changed cans for a laugh, I think I might have pissed off the neighbours....in the next village!

The loudest bike I've heard in the flesh is my friends 2010 'blade with an Akrapovic system on. It's painful to be in the vicinity if he gives it some beans Shocked

I was bidding on a near mint set and bottled out when it hit 700 quid.

Some Staintunes for the vtec popped up on eBay about 2 months ago, I set an alarm on my phone to place a bid near the end. Alas my phone battery ran out and I missed the auction.

I was gutted when I saw they were unsold at £300!

The relisted and sold at the usual Staintune price range Sad

I always use MyiBidder bid sniper for stuff like that when I know I really want it but I need to control my urge to go mental on closing bids.
