 |
|
Couple of weeks ago, while someone attempted to squeeze past while I reverse parked I scraped someone's parked car.
She was polite about it and we swapped phone numbers and agreed she'd get a quote from a body shop and let me know.
She's got in touch cost is £150, I have a photo of the damage to her car but stupidly it doesn't show her number plate.
The options she's given me are to bank transfer the money, paypal it or pay the bodyshop directly.
I don't think she's going to try and screw me over but I want to cover my back - how do I cover myself against an insurance claim later? ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.

That. If she's properly British and middle/working[*] class, stop fretting about it, you're not going to get stitched up.

As above. Pay the paintshop, get an invoice detailing the repair, what car it was to and payment receipt. Box of chocs/bottle of wine to the owner for the inconvenience.
If you get a spurious claim, you tell your insurance it's already been fixed and paid for and prove it.
You're lucky. I dinged my neighbours car and it cost me £450 to fix (fancy paint and hit a corner meaning they had to do three panels). Ironically, when I called up to pay, he'd dinged another bit on the way into the spray shop so I had a slightly odd discussion with the body shop guy about which bit's I was paying for. His share of the bill came to more than mine! ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Was leaning towards paypal as more convenient for me but also a record of the payment having happened.
She has a photo of my quarter bumper but don't know if it includes my plate.
I had figured bodyshop receipt with numberplate written on would be quite solid but I don't know where abouts the bodyshop may be. ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.

^^^Sort of this, along with all the others who said pay the bodyshop directly.
As well as getting their bank details, ask them for their address and when the car is coming for repair, on condition that you will pay (on their premises, using their PC if they want) when you've seen the car, pre or during repair.
Keep the receipt and don't give her wine/chocs, unless you want to shag her at some point - could be seen as an admission of further guilt, if it goes radio rental later on.**

Thinking about it, what I would have done (hindsight being 20:20), and would probably do in that situation in the future: accept full responsibility and write and sign an admission of liability on the spot documenting what happened, who was involved, and the damage caused. Get the injured party to sign it too.
Because why?
Because you don't want it to go through insurance, and the best way to avoid that is to show that the injured party can trust you to not try and wriggle out of it.
Because having shown goodwill by putting things in writing first, you can then more easily ask for a written "full and final settlement" confirmation in return to bring it to a close.
And if it does go sour, what you've actually got is a signed record that you gently scraped a sole occupant car with no possibility of hidden damage or personal injury to the driver and their four cousins who later remember that they were in it when you smashed into it at 30mph.
Problem? ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I've asked her where the bodyshop is and she's given me the post code, it's only 30 mins from my house so not hard to get to in person to pay and get invoice.
I'm guessing they'll want paying while working on it before they'll let her collect the car so I've asked which garage (there's two for the postcode) and when they'd want paying ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.
