I know - moped but I've read some threads that have left me confused. The term 'ped' seems to be used only to describe scooters.

When I had a moped it was a bike under 50cc with a top speed of 30mph (1983/84), that included bikes and scooters, gears and automatic. You could ride one at 16 on the road with no training whatsoever.

Is it still the same, except for the CBT?

I read a thread that seemed to suggest that if you did a CBT on a scooter (automatic) you couldn't ride a 'geared' bike.

What exactly are the rules?

Just curious.

You most certainly can ride a geared bike after taking CBT on a scooter - it's the route I took. The law is changing though, not sure when.

this site may be wrong as my cbt instructor said it doesn't matter. you can still ride a geared bike even if you do the test on the scooter.

As far as i'm aware a cbt will let allow you to ride a geared bike even if you did your cbt on an auto... with cars full licences you are only entitled to an auto if thats what you did your test in...

If your getting a geared bike and do your cbt on a scooter then its pretty stupid imo, gears are allot harder to get to grips with.

This DSA website page details what they say a moped is.

At the age of 16 you can do your CBT and then ride a bike under 50cc which can't go faster than 50kmph (30mph).

There is one CBT qualifaction, it does say on your CBT what bike it was done but that is for information purposes. Do your CBT on a 50cc twist and go and if you're 17 you can then ride a geared 125.

OK, I understand, basically apart from the addition of a CBT nothing has changed really. And it seems that scooters seem more popular than 50cc geared bikes/mopeds.

Ta.
