I have been driving for over 2 years now and I can change my A2 for a shiny A licence.

But...
Do I need to do the theory test again?

I've done it for my bike, car and truck.
I don't want to do anymore theory tests...

I know its a money grabbing scam but I don't mind the practicals, as I wouldn't mind getting a few driving tips.

Think the Gov says no.

You won’t normally need to take a theory test if you want to upgrade within a vehicle category.

Don't trust me though.

If you have had the A2 licence for over 2 years then no you do not need to do the theory again.

The only complicated part of the whole ordeal is if you turn 24 with an A2 licence, You can go straight to A provided you have a current valid theory test, so if that has ran out, you need to do it again.

I'm confused again.

I have an A2 Licence driven for just over 2 years.
Just turned 24.
No theory tests done since passing.
What do I do?
Can't drive a 1200GS without an A licence. Sick

So can Legislation Monkeys be summoned akin to CandyMan I wonder?
Let's find out...

GROBREGOR! GROBREGOR! GROBREGOR! ...Thinking

Maybe you have to be saying it in the dark in front of a mirror?
That being said, the idea of a hairy Scot turning up behind me in that scenario is far more terrifying than CandyMan ever could be.

No need, pinkfloyd covered it.

Once you've held A2 for over 2 years, you can do "progressive access" to A. Sadly, the only thing that means in the UK is that you don't need another theory pass.

You still need to do module 1 and module 2 tests again, on a 595cc+ 40kW+ bike displaying L plates front and rear.

I'm really glad I'm from the generation that if you didn't get killed or maimed and could stay on the bike for 5 minutes without falling off, you got a do anything licence for bikes. Sounds like I'd need to go on a course to understand how to get to the point where I could legally ride anything.

Much preferred the Darwinian method.

It's ridiculous, if you can handle 47bhp you'll be fine with more than that.

I wouldn't of bothered with bikes these days, i have no interest in waiting while 24 to ride something worthwhile. At 21 i had a tuned GSXR750 (116 rwhp), a GSXR400 and a YPVS in the shed and even these weren't quite enough for me. 46bhp is no where near enough for an everyday roadbike.

46bhp is plenty to kill yourself or at the very least lose your license. I'd want more power if I rode on motorways regularly, but I've only once on a big boy road, going up hill into a head wind thought hmm... I could do with a little extra.

Each to their own. I got into biking cause it was a cheap way of going very fast.

Have to agree I probably would never have bothered my ass doing a bike test if it was the rigmarole i is now.

Took my test on a Yammy YDS7 250 in 1976.

Instructions, Go round the block and when the examiner steps out on front of you, stop before hitting him. Thank you for not hitting me Sir, here is you pass certificate. Thumbs Up

Go home, count pennies, trade in for an RD250. Life was very simple then.

Cheers mate.

Always wanted one as was a massive Kevin Schwantz fan,Shame the bike was never the animal i expected it to be though.

I nearly bought one in 1998 for £1700. Tatty but mild tune / RGV wheels. Test rode it, had cash, then got talked out of it.

Bollocks Sad

Ye it is total bs. If you are under 24 and want to go the progressive route here is a run down of the cost. For me at least.

Provisional £50
CBT £120
Theory £30
Mod 1 £225
MOD 2 350
Retest can't remember I think £150
Wait 2 years...
Mod 1 £225
Mod 2 £350
Total Cost £1500

My Car licence cost about £700 I think including retest. Then I can jump straight into a BMW 540i (and I did) about 300bhp I believe.

Might as well mention my HGV as well... long as I am ranting about the stupid state of driving tests.

Resend for provisional entitlements and medical: £90
theory test £30
hazard perception (I think £25)
Theory CPC case study £25
Mod 4 practical drivers safety checks bs £300
Tacho card £36
Driving lessons and practical £1200

But once you have done all that you can't drive professionally until you sat in the class room for 35 hours of cpc which is roughly £500.

I spent £1200 and ended up with a dodgy school who hired agency drivers as instructors so failed my first test and didn't bother going again for a while. As all you need to be a HGV instructor is to hold you licence for 3 years. You do not even need to drive a HGV in 3 years.

So another £1200 to go with a proper school.
Total Cost so far: £3406.

Now assuming I pass with the school I am at 1st time and I want to get my C+E licence (artics) I have to fork out £1300.
Cost: £4706.

Obviously I didn't go about it the cheapest way but the state of HGV training is horrendous compared to bike training. At least the instructors on bikes are required to be qualified.
