How do you deal with people that don't say thank you?

If they don't say thanks, they're bit of a knob.
If you say "You're welcome" then you've negated the pleasantry of holding the door open by calling them rude and in doing so are yourself being rude, which means you're being bit of a knob.
Might as well just call them something rude.

People who hold doors open are bloody annoying.

Suddenly two human beings' lives are awkwardly intertwined over the trivial action of negotiating a basic door mechanism.

It's a door. I can use it.

Having said all that, I say cheers like anyone else does. But if I don't get any thanks for doing it, who cares.

I think it's the faux-politeness that gets to me. I remember when living in London I told my two Brazilian flatmates that they'd soon grow sick of all the 'please's, 'thank you's and 'sorry's in public because nobody really ever means it.

I did that fairly recently to a couple entering an Indian restaurant. In hindsight doing it to the big baldy geeeeeza wasn't the brightest move, but his wife did say sorry sheepishly.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest, I still hold them open regardless, not something I ever thought about until I read this.

A thank you costs nothing though. I get equally annoyed by those that don't say thank you when you let them out of junctions etc. Grrr

Not bothered about the thanks... I can never judge the right distance to warrant not holding the door open... "Fuck it buddy you're just too far away"...

You can take some pleasure on holding doors open for people who are really a bit too far away and make them awkwardly run towards the door whilst you smile politely.

It's a good trollololol that people have no right to get upset about because you are being polite... right?

I had it the opposite way last week,
Working in a big store carrying a big set of ladders,

Was walking towards a door a woman was holding open so I thought great,
Started to walk through and almost hit a woman with the steps who was walking through the other side who obviously thought the door was being opened for her also,

I apologised and smiled as it was a tad amusing almost knocking her out with ladders, I just got an evil look from her,
She didn't even say it's ok to my sorry! Said nothing!
I continued to give myself priority of walking through the door first as -
Man carrying ladders takes priority over a woman in my opinion,

Did give me a proper megabitch stare though,
Some of these shop assistants are right arseholes,
It's not like I want to be carrying ladders around a busy store and stick my head in the ceiling space and stuff, plus I usually have a 2 hour drive to and from the jobs,
As a service engineer you can come across alot of miserable gits or jobs worths

Amen. When someone's polite these days I'm genuinely shocked. I find women can be ruder than men. You know the type. 50 years old, drives a Mercedes, divorced, angry at the world

I did have a woman once have a go at me for doing it - I don't need someone to hold a door open for me - kind of burning her bra type fen dom person. The only one though, just about every other has always said thanks. Manners cost nothing.

I hold doors open and tbh usually get thanks or acknowledgement. Maybe is is because you are a boy?

Whatever. I don't mind if people are pricks over the little things.

The only time I find it awkward is when I and another person are going in the same direction along a route festooned with doorways. Holding every door or saying multiple thank yous gets tiresome and/or embarrassing.

Eventually I have to do up an imaginary loose shoelace or something.

I always hold doors open because I was raised to be polite. 9 times out of 10 people do say 'thank you' or similar. The 1 out of 10 that doesn't leads an ultimately sad and unrewarding existence, and will be hated by their own children...
