No matter how long/fast/slow I ride, the temp gauge only rises about 10% (CBR600 F3)

The only time I've seen it rise properly is stationary waiting for a rideout (with about 100 bikes nearby causing the air temp to be particularly warm). Knackered thermostat?

Lots of gauges are like that, they have a line at about 10% indicating that it is up to temp.

Shirley it would be dead centre on the gauge? Not just above the first horizontal line...

Mine used to run at around third up the gauge unless sitting in traffic or stopped on idle and it'd go to just over half way when the fan would kick in

Changed thermostat and same
But if you're not getting the fan kicking in ever then I'd go thermostat

CBRs can run hot. My F4 and F4i in summer sit at around 78-85 in normal city riding. When I stop for a long traffic light I'll often hear or rather feel the fan kick in.

As a cheapo fix maybe you should wire in a manual switch and turn on the fan when you stop at lights?

The problem IIRC it's a £50 part and you need to remove the tank and airbox to get at it.

My 500 behaves just like that. Probably just a Honda thing.
I've only ever heard the fan kick in once on a hot day, gauge only comes up sitting in a queue of traffic after a blast.

If you leave it standing idling for 5-10 minutes it'll start to heat up. Bet the fan comes on eventually.

The fact the gauge will rise if I'm stopped for some time in warm conditions led me to believe it was just a worn thermostat taking an age to move

It more than likely is the thermostat

I don't recall it being a difficult job but I don't really recall doing it either

Could be the thermostat stuck open. It is meant to be closed when cold with a tiny hole to allow slow movement of the water. This allows the engine to warm up quicker.

I had the same problem on my Golf and that was exactly what it was, I assumed it was the same principle on the bike.

Can you get genuine Honda parts still or is it pattern only?

Usually the thermostat stuck. Have a look at your fuel consumption figures, if they're shit compared to the 'norm' then that's your culprit.

Usually wear. The guides wear causing the valve to cant over and jam or catch on a lip. TBH on cars I change mine whenever I have the cooling system apart they are so cheap. Never had any trouble on bikes.

OP, If you have a laser thermometer see what the temperature coming out of the thermostat is but to be honest, if it runs OK and your fan cuts in when it gets hot it could just as well be your temperature sender on the arse. Your fan will have a separate temperature switch so as long as that works, Thumbs Up .

I guess I'll have to let it run stationary until it heats up and see if the fan does actually come in. I can't remember ever having heard it

I've only seen the gauge rise more than 10% twice in 6 months of ownership

The reason why most temperature gauges read dead on middle when warmed up is because the gauge doesn't read linear to the coolant temperature. It's not like a fuel gauge where the needle corresponds to the level(ish) - on a temperature gauge it gets to middle just before full running temp then stays there for the next so many degrees (guessing 20-ish). After that it starts rising again.

This is also why you can 'suddenly' overheat after everything has been apparently normal - the temperature HAS been rising but the gauge hasn't registered it until it starts to overheat badly.

You do have coolant in the places where you should have coolant?

Aye, and new coolant at that. No leaks. Shirley it would overheat if the coolant was low anyway, and it's doing the polar opposite

Yup. They have a huge dead spot in the 80-90 range engineered in to stop people getting alarmed by their temperature gauge rising until they really should be alarmed at their temperature gauge rising

My f2 will usually get up to around half way quickly, then creep up towards 3/4 while stationary, when it starts to go above that the fan will kick in..... which is very obvious when stationary, not so much when riding anything above walking pace
