Hi all,

I'm getting older and realising that I'm not doing enough cool stuff with bikes, so I'm thinking of planning a big tour for 2017, hopefully with a few mates. Here's my plan for May-June some time in 2017:

Trip 5 days/nights, 3 week days
Wednesday Fly out early to Milan
Pick bikes up morning
Ride to Portofino (108 miles)
Sleep in Portofino
Thursday Portofino to Pisa (80 miles)
Pisa to Grosseto (97 miles)
Sleep in Grosseto
Friday Ride to Rome (117 miles)
Sleep in Rome
Saturday Ride to Naples (140 miles)
Sleep in Naples
Sunday Ride around Pompeii/Amalfi Coast
Ride back to Naples + return bikes + fly home
Back home Sunday evening

All in all about 600+ miles in 5 days, likely on a Ducati Scrambler or something similar, hired in Milan and dropped off in Rome.

Due to bike hire, it's going to be quite an expensive trip, so I want to do it right. Anyone done something similar before? Any recommended road/stops on the west coast of Italy? Also, I'm trying to keep it as cheap as possible to get mates interested (haggling bike firm for group discount, airbnb for sleeping), so I'm trying to keep it to 5 days - but is that enough for a fairly long trip?

You do know that Naples has the reputation as being the centre of murder in Europe Shocked

To be honest Naples is likely to be removed anyway, we were only interested in Rome and the Amalfi Coast, and there's a bike drop off point in Naples. We'll probably stay somewhere on the Amalfi Coast then just go to Naples to fly out.

We worked our way down into Italy last year but only as far as Como. All I will say is brace yourself, the Italians were by far the worst drivers encountered on our entire trip (France, Germany, Switzerland etc.). The roads can be poor, the towns and cities are more manic than you could believe possible, all in all it's hard work.

However, Como was great and I could have easily spent a few days there.

From what I've heard Rome isn't a city you want to be travelling on the roads in.

why dont you use the motorail to get your bikes there and save the cost of hiring them?

we are using train from paris to nice and then riding the coast to tour italy. This would save you a small fortune.
