For that petty refund, I'd have just left the policy running for the no claims bonus.

The internet is littered with poor reviews for MCE yet we always read stories like this ...

After the statutory 14 day cooling off period, neither the underwriter nor the broker are obliged to give you back so much as a penny and can charge you a fee (which is not required to have any connection to their actual costs) for cancelling the policy.

I'm guessing you're getting 50% of the premium back less a £50 fee?

Honestly, I have no idea why people think of an insurance policy as some sort of depreciating asset. Consider it a sunk cost the moment you pay it, with anything that you get back being a bonus.

Like DrSnoosnoo I'd have left it running worth it for the no claims bonus and the ability to go for a ride if there is a nice day.

MCE have been cheapest for me for years.
Their preferred or owned solicitors Fletchers are shite though. My seperate solicitor had to take over defending a counterclaim against be because they missed time frames for court and evidence and just didn't really have much going on.

Wait til you need to claim - they're a nightmare. You'd be better off claiming from an injury lawyer for you specialist. Oh and when they do settle your claim, they pass your details on to other companies who consistently bombard you with calls asking if you've been in an accident.

^ what they said. MCE were crap before I had to claim, they charged me twice for my policy & failed to send out insurance documents. Then going through a claim was a nightmare, avoid Fletchers at all costs.

Been on the road "legally" for 15 years and never needed to claim from any insurers.
Unless limbs were lost at least I wouldn't claim from ANY injury lawyer.
Pass my details to other companies.... I get phone calls daily asking if I've been in an accident (although now I'm getting phone calls from Indians claiming to work for Microsoft, so I'm having some fun with them at the moment)

Paid £176 for mine in Dec and to cancel if i sell, I'll get £81 back. Or they'll reinsure the new bike for me, at £150 more than everyone else is quoting!

i was insured on a chinky cg copy as a first bike, bought a new bike went to change insurance over and they said they couldnt insure the new bike because its too powerful.. it was another 125..

i questioned this they said they thought the cg was a moped so they have to cancel the insurance as its void...

they canceled my policy on me.. then chased me for about 6 months for a £90 cancellation fee even though id told them to go forth and fornicate with themselves.

they eventually got the idea.

Another one for would have been an idea to keep it running regardless as you've paid for the policy anyway. Oh well, could of done this could have done that etc is a lesson learnt for the future and all.

I'd preach the "buy the cheapest possible policy, don't give the insurance company a reason to need to contact you and finally try not to crash."

I'd seek advice on here in regards to anything insurance related prior to phoning the insurance company because everything's recorded and once you've said something and put your foot in it so to speak there's no going back. Once you've received an insurance certificate I'd consider that the last bit of contact with the company for the year, with the exceptions of moving address and alike. Also remember any advice you do ask for goes like this "my friend needs help with x y z," get it? Wink

MCE tried to screw me on a refund. Read what they sent you carefully, write a written complaint explaing why they are wrong, demand correct amount including interest at the same rate you were paying on finance. Impose penalty charges on them equivalent to those they would impse on you for late payment. For any incorrect cheque, tell them you'll "keep that as an apology". It's hillarious as mce really can't count. They tried to tell me i asked for a refund in the last 90 days of my policy so i listed the 120 or so days that they owed me for. Took ages, but eventually got a satisfactory sum.

Ombudsmen won't do anything unless you have complained and they have not offered a solution.

I have to say the experence between crashing and getting a payout was much better with mce than swinton, in the actually doing the full comp thing and looking after me MCE were worth the money, and their pet solocitors were at least semi-competent.

Unfortunately, MCE is the only insurance company in the UK that will insure me... Sad

Why will only one company cover you? Did I miss something?

Even so.....I'm sure there must be something else awry on the quote. I was an insurance consultant for 3 years. I've repented now though

You also have the option of a charge back, which is harder for them to contest.

To be honest, I haven't had any problems with them.

When I got my new bank card I forgot to update them with the new details, they phoned me and said "We are unable to take payment....", I thought they were going to charge me an extortionate "admin" fee, they didn't take anything to update.

In fact the only problem I had with them was the constant phone calls especially at 8/9 in the morning after I had came home from night shift, I told them that it would be easier to email me with what they are trying to offer me and Ill get back to them.

MCE were about £100 cheaper than the policy I eventually took out with a different insurer. I went with the more expensive one because MCE (and the ridiculous £750 compulsory excess).
