hi,
1st : I make this disclaimer : I know next to nothing about car engines & really just handed my mate the relevant sockets, spanners etc.

ok, heres the story : car was making crunching noises when selecting gears (especially reverse) then lost a couple of gears.
my mate reckoned it was the clutch.(he was a mechanic back in poland, werent they all?)
so we took it all apart & yes, the clutch release bearing was destroyed, as well as some of the "fingers" on the clutch plate.
bought a new clutch kit off ebay. it was the proper 3 part kit.
after 2 days of struggling with seized bolts etc, the new clutch is in Smile

no mean feat, since we done it in the front garden with a jack & some strategically placed pieces of wood.

start the car up & it selects gears,... with no crunching noises, woohoo!
BUT..... there's no drive. nothing!
clutch pedal feels a bit soft but not too bad.
we topped up the gear oil. there isn't a bleed valve as such, just a small plastic pipe, which has a little clip holding it in place but it was pulled off & some bubbles did appear but fluid is now flowing out & its still the same.

anyone any ideas?
ANY advice welcome,

cheers,
GAZ

Did you put the thrust race on the right way round? Some are directional, if put on the wrong way around it'll press against the pressure plate springs when you tighen everything up and the clutch will be permanently disengaged, hence why you can select gears but never get drive. Putting the friction plate on the wrong way around can also achieve this, it definitely does on a SIIa Landrover Embarassed
If it was a simple hydraulic problem you'd get exactly the opposite, gear engagement all but impossible.

(I suspect the BBC will be reporting a Polish mechanic appearing at A&E to have a clutch alignment tool surgically removed tomorrow)

hi,
thanks for the reply.
1st off, we didnt use any clutch alignment tool. is this really necessary?
as the gearbox all lined up, we presumed it must be lined up inside as all external bolts lined up.

2nd : what do you mean by "thrust race"?
the clutch kit comes in 3 parts, pressure plate, drive plate & release bearing.
. ......ah, so the "clutch release bearing" is a "thrust race"? & might be in backwards?
i/we hadnt thought of that.
we did think maybe we had 1 of the plates in back-to-front but the plate in question has "GEARBOX SIDE" printed on it, so it is facing outwards & the big heavy cast iron bell housing bolts onto this.

looks like we are taking it back off then....
oh, btw its a fiat stilo, if that makes any difference. .

cheers,.

First, what car ? cable or hydraulic clutch ?
Alignment isnt about bolt holes lining up, its about being centred.

I think this may be the problem no drive to the input shaft of the gearbox
