Hi all,

Drove home yesterday, everything worked as expected. Right up until I turned off the ignition and chained the bike up.

This morning and this evening the dash backlight and the headlights have stopped working. Side lights and pass lights work as expected. Hazards, indicators, tail light, working as expected.

The bike hasn't been moved, knocked over or touched since last night when it was all working fine. I have changed nothing on the bike (other than OEM replacement parts during a service ~1 month in to owning the bike). I haven't washed it in an ashamably long time. It hasn't been raining. The battery has enough juice to start the bike effortlessly.

What could have caused this to happen overnight without the bike being touched? It's parked in a secure underground carpark that doesn't vary much in temperature, so I highly doubt any weather issues.

More importantly, what do I check? I have a gut feeling towards the connector block for the front of the bike, but I don't know where to find that on the 04 R1 (will do some googling).

The bike had a brand new OEM wiring loom during its service because the previous owner had hacked up the previous loom, and I wanted a bike that would give me no issues Brick Wall

Thanks for reading

Check fuses and then check connetor plugs around front fairing stay.

Took a look today. The fusebox on the R1 is very awkward to get to!

Fuses all intact. Disturbing the fuse-box area was sufficient to get the lights working as normal again. I attempted to keep disturbing wires in an effort to get the lights to turn off again, to identify a culprit, but met no success there. All wires are ok from a visual inspection.

The terminals on the fuse were a bit dirty, so I put in a spare fuse with clean terminals, however the lights did flicker a little on my ride home this evening, indicating that there exists a bad connection somewhere. Being as disturbing only the fuse-box was sufficient to get the lights working again, I think the issue must be around that area.

To my surprise the fuse for the headlights also controls the backlight for the dash, which I wrongly assumed not to be the case due to the dash being LCD.

I'll have to set aside some time to properly check out the wiring.

The 5PW has the same large white multi-pin connector under the front left of the front nose fairing as the 4XW and as my 5JJ.It has a reputation of corroding the lower pins causing all sorts of problems until cleaned out with contact cleaner.

The pic shows a 4XW that I was working on

This was something that I wanted to check, however with the left upper fairing removed, I wasn't able to find it. I have the 5VY model.

I have been studying the wiring diagram. I'm not great at reading them, but I think I understand the part related to the headlights now. Having read the diagram, I do not believe the headlight fuse can be to blame.

The headlight fuse is responsible for:

  • Tail light - working
  • Licence plate light - unchecked
  • Auxiliary lights - working
  • Dipped lights - not working
  • Main lights - not working
  • Dash lights - not working

The Aux lights have never stopped working, so according to the minimal diagram I drew, the fuse must be working correctly. The next thing to happen is a wire goes to the dash lights. These do not work. Equally, no power must be reaching the first headlight relay. So either; (1) the wires going to the dash and headlight relay are damaged, or (2) there is a connector block after the ignition fuse and the terminals are not sufficiently conductive.
