Hi, I've just bought my first bike and am brand new to this. I've had the bike 3 days, First the headlight went which I renewed, and now the the oil light keeps going on and off and it seems to have affected the indicators which were fine. I checked the oil and it seemed fine, and I checked connections on battery and indicators but seemed fine. I topped it up anyway but the oil light is still flickering on and off. It settled when I was doing a constant 25-30 mph. Any help welcome

Drain the oil and refill with new. The oil light indicates low oil pressure, not low oil level.

If with new correct oil in, the light still comes on you probably have one of two problems - either a faulty oil pressure switch or a serious bottom-end engine problem.

If you got it from a dealer, you should probably take it back and get them to sort it.

Would this affect the indicators or is that a separate problem.

If you are having oil pressure or oil pressure switch issues, then it's unrelated to the indicators.

If it's something else, like an electrical glitch (say, in the instrument panel?) the the two could be related.

Sounds similar to the problems we had with our old work hack Zip, when it had a dead battery.

It would start on the kick when it was so dead you didn't even get ignition lights, but the generator produced just enough juice to get it going; after that, you got a too slow tickover that made the oil light flicker and the indicators would light up, but not flash, until you got over about 20mph.

Stick a test meter across the battery (engine off) and if you get less than 12 volts, charge it up and if it wont take/hold a charge, get a new one, they cost peanuts.

I would agree with Shaft. Spot on in my opinion.
2 stroke zip does not have anything to do with oil pressure.
The sensor is in the oil tank, so no need to drain oil unless you remove sensor.
I would say its all related to battery.
If oil light continues to flicker and its not low on oil, it will be an electrical fault (poor connection or break in wire) or sensor in oil tank.

The fuel and oil lights are run through a bulb checker so any weird behaviour is usually voltage related. The fuse holder on my one failed and i had your symptoms. It was intermittent at first and then got very regular.

Sounds like either overheating or fuel starvation.

What do you do when it happens? Stop at the side of the road or just keep the throttel nailed?

Or something else?

Replace your fuel tap or drill thru it. My zip recently passed 50,000km. Pm for my list of things replaced.

I had a 2 stroke zip 50 as my first bike, it was the fastest 50cc for miles around until some joker turned up on an Aerox (I swear it was bored out...). I found with my particular bike that the motor was very reliable and very responsive to tuning (as much as a 50cc can be), the plastics were poorly fitted but very durable and the electrics were, well, crap. Even with a relatively new bike it's worth going over the wiring front to back just to check the connections and components. Rectifier seemed to be a weak point and mine came with a rubbish battery. That being said I made some brilliant memories on that bike. Derestriction, lighter rollers, better breathing and a bigger carb jet and that little plastic rocket used to hit 60mph (on the probably wildly inaccurate clock)! I once had 5 people on it (on private land) due to a bet. It managed at least running pace before it keeled over; most dramatic 10mph crash ever seen!
