I've got my mum's laptop here as she told me it was "not working very well", it was riddled with all kinds but I've formatted and back on Win 7 Home Premium 64

Spent hours looking for the right version of Windows, as the goal here is to upgrade to 10 on it (legit key) but was factory installed and no cd.

Got the the desktop and installed chipset and assorted drivers, all good but Windows update seems to not want to update. It just hangs on "checking for updates" and doesn't do anything.

Did some digging last night and found various methods from clean booting to running manual windows update client hotfixes, nothing seems to make it want to start downloading.

Don't even get me started on Microsoft's phone activation system, that shit is messed up.

I also tried loading the windows 10 upgrade tool from the M$ site and it seemed to work, did the 3gb download or so, said installing and just hung for hours before I turned the cunt off.

I had a similar issue with W7 Pro and an Intel Rapid Storage driver, couldn't update until that was uninstalled (it was part of the chipset drivers). Might be worth looking to see if that's running.

Urgh, 15 minutes to install, 10+ hours to fully update W7 last time I installed it.

I also had the hanging updates. One of the many, many Update updates or fixes eventually sorted it. Sorry, I can't recall which one, I just wanted to install you with a probably false sense of hope.

I had the same problem, posted here last year about it. Call to Microsoft tech support didn't fix it. In the end Chris said 'leave it running' so I did and it took a couple of hours to bring up the update list.

Why Microsoft don't add all the Win7 and Win8 serials to the Win10 activation list, I don't fucking know!

M$ logic - You need to download Win 7 Home Premium, use your key, let it update over 24 hrs, then download Win10!

Fuck my life.

I did just leave it on in the end, came back and it had downloaded and installed them but it stayed for hours the first time without any downloads.

I don't even know what I did as I did that many things or whether it just needed to be left for hours on end from the start.

Sorted now though, on Win10 Thumbs Up

Already went through them, didn't do anything of immediate effect at the time though!

This used to the be the case, but they changed it a couple of months ago. You can just clean install Win 10 now. It's much less of a ball ache.

update to ie 11 first with the standalone installer (with updates set to never check!) sometimes enough on its own to cure it,

but if not try kb3065987, it fixes a memory leak in windows update that hangs it at 1.5-2gb ram and high cpu use.

you can do an inplace upgrade if you have the windows 10 install media already set up but win 7 needs to be activated first, once the on place upgrade has been done you can wipe t and do a fresh install.

The activation status, serial numbers and hardware hash with have been saved on the m$ servers,

make sure you don't upgrade in between re-installs though as it can break your auto activation for the next time, (win 10 licence becomes tied to hardware)
