What with J&L and KCs still closed after flooding, does anyone know of anybody else in the region worth looking at for servicing, tyre replacement etc? Had a good mechanic when I was back in Oxfordshire who was tucked out of the way and highly rated locally, anyone like that around here? ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Chris at Cockermouth Motorcycles.
He's a one-man band, small workshop up a back street in Cockermouth.
He's always been pretty competative with tyres (enough so it's not worth arguing the toss) and is very tolerant of you rocking up with a loose wheel and fitting it there and then. He doesn't keep them in stock so you need to order them in first.
He's quite good for organising an MOT or whatever at short notice too.
I would trust him to work on my bike. I wouldn't trust many.
Another good place is Lakeland motorcycles in Pica out Workington way (Chris used to work for them). The guy there (Roger, I think) is an ex honda technician and is very thorough. Just don't watch him doing an MOT on your bike, he goes over it with a fine tooth comb shaking his head and sucking his teeth the whole time. Then passes it.
Both are oldschool style backstreet motorcycle mechanics.
If you're going to Lakeland, make sure you check how to get there before you set off, it's in the middle of bumfuck nowhere. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Cheers stinkwheel, saves me waiting till April for J&L, Fazer needs tyres now. Both all-makes mechanics?
Have you used J&L? I read mixed reviews, although you get that on most dealers I suppose. Supposed to have a very experienced Yamaha mechanic, if I go by their own claims. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Yes, all makes at both of those.
Never used J&L for servicing. Their parts lady is very helpful for getting parts (no arguing about what you want or telling you to come back with a part number, she looks it up then tells you if she can get it). They keep more stock than most bike shops these days, they have saved my arse by having brake pads in stock for immediate collection after mine shat themselves just before a run a couple of times.
They provide and prep bikes for the NSA champion Alan Tinnion. Who I believe got a standard R6 down under the 10s mark over a 1/4 mile last year? So they must be doing something right. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
