Has any one used Lumiweld? I have a crankcase to repair were the chain has been loose and has eaten through to the ignition.

Yes. But be aware, depending on material, the temperature the solder flows and the temperature the aluminium sags into a puddle can be very close together.

Last time I used it, I found the biggest problem was getting enough heat into the piece over a wide enough area. I set a bigger blowlamp with a wide flame running over the whole piece then used a micro blowlamp to heat the area I was working on. Keep the flame moving to avoid meltiness.

Now with your third and fourth hands apply the solder and guddle it about with the stainless wire...

Would it not be better to get someone to TIG it up then you can file it back?

I've used lumiweld to solder two red bull cans together to make a micro-alcohol stove and I've used it to build up the bit on a brake lever that pushes the light switch. I've heard of it being used on crankcases but never tried it myself.

I still have some in my garage, somewhere. I agree with Stinkwheel. The point of getting it to bond is about the same temperature that the piece you are trying to fix starts melting. I must admit to using a great big torch but a smaller torch would not put enough heat in the part.

A chum used it to repair pulled out stud holes on Dnepr MT11 crank cases, but as stinkers says, he had fun getting it all warm enough without wrecking the cases.
