pc 1 yr old. gaming issue.

hello.
A while back I bought a gaming pc, and recently when I start on a game itll last 10 mins ish, and itll just suddenly reset for no reason, and i mean full pc shutdown and reboot.

Nothing is getting hot, gpu chills at 50deg ish and same with cpu etc.

It started on one game, now its happening on all of them. (dragon age inquisition, tomb raider, etc).

If i knock the grfx down it seems to cure it (cant stand playing shite grfx for too long so cant be 100%).

I swapped out for my fathers gpu and it made no difference, so card is okay.

Spec is

windows 7
intel i7 core 4790k 4.00ghz
16gb corsair ram vengeance
gigabyte z97 hd3 r2.0 motherboard
nvidia geforce 970 gpu.
2tb barracuda hdds.
corsair 750watt psu


Also tried running lots of stress test programs. None failed except the gpu tester. All temps would be fine, and randomly it'd reset.

Have you tried a different Power Supply?

It could be starting to fail, then the GPU draws more power than it can supply

Could be that the power supply is barely up to the job. What's it's rating (Wattage)?
Back in the olden days (1990s) when I maintained PCs the first thing I would try with an issue like this was to open up the case, clean all the dust out, re-seat all the boards and peripherals, very often this was all that was needed. You'd be amazed how much crap builds up.

I actually found a mouse nesting in one machine at a garage where some silly sod had taken a plate off the back and not re-fitted it.

Its a 750watt corsair. Inside the case is pretty much mint. Barely any dust.

Already done the usual reseat on various and re heatsink (on gpu).

do a cleaning install of the gfx drivers, the option to do this shows up when installing them.

only install physx, the drivers and HD audio drivers.

Removed reinstalled a few times. Reformatted windows to double check windows files.

Still no luck.

As Mr. iPencil above suggested, try a diff PSU.

And run memtest for a couple for hours.

Download HWMonitor, try to trigger the shutdown but keep an eye on voltages. Something could be overvolting/shorting.

For some bizarre reason on my old PC when I'd look at smoke in CSGO for whatever reason (and no matter what the settings were) the pc would cut power and restart immediately.

I did notice by staring directly at HWMonitor that my 12v PCI-E socket was overvolting to fuck immediately before the shutdown. Changing which PCI-E Socket the GPU sat in made no difference to this so I thought the GPU could be faulty (turns out it wasn't cause it's in my new build running perfectly).

My event logs would also give me a Kernel Power 41 error with no error logs for anything else before the shutdown event.

To this day I have no idea what was causing it though, because I tried replacing pretty much every component except the motherboard.

If it's not PSU, it could be GPU, if not that then it could be RAM, if not that then your motherboard itself could just be fucked.

If there are no software or driver logs in your event logs then I doubt it's a driver issue either. A good program to check drivers is Driver Booster 3. Make sure when you install it you don't install any other bullshit software they try to offer for free.

I have a very similar spec, and run a 600w corsair PSU with 4 hard drives.

The GTX970 is not power hungry.

Are psus interchangeable? Plug and play?

I could try swapping if so; otherwise ill have to drop 200 on a 1000watt supply. Be gutted if not that.

So long as the supply you test with has adequate power and enough connectors you will be fine, all the connectors are standardised.

its not all about the power, the quality of the supply is more important for getting clean stable voltage.

It is a far more power hungry system and runs fine off an 850w PSU.

I thought id upgrade. Chose a rm1000w corsair. Its pretty quiet. Cured all my problems. The gpu stress test has even smoothed out. Tested games etc for a week or so with perfect results grfx maxxed out.
