But, back then I was curious to learn and a few years later I have confirmed that I don't have any of the patience or much of the understanding.

I need an SQL based classifieds website, to sell cars and bikes.
Nothing fancy or groundbreaking, just something someone could list a car/bike for sale for free, maybe if no too difficult, share said proud advert to some social media profile.

Anyone reading able to give me a quote? (it will need some editing later, and I have a VPS package with OVH if that matters).

What you're asking for would price up quite quickly. Learn how yourself, it's quite rewarding.

Simple steps:
- Design the HTML site with some fake adverts
- Figure out how to use PHP to populate the data in those adverts using variables
- Figure out how to pass in a variable to PHP to get it to change which advert it loaded
- Create a simple database (PhpMyAdmin makes it easy) and write some simple queries from PHP to get the data.
- Use the data to fill the site as you've already done
- Read up on SQL injection to make sure someone from BCF doesn't drop your database once you post it

It should be achievable with a few months work (of a few hours each week) and a lot of copy/paste from Google.

I suspect there are off the shelf products that would do what you need, you just bung your own graphics & whatnot onto a template.

Take a look at existing websites that do roughly what you want then look at the small print at the bottom of the screen, it usually says who designed the site. As J.M. said having a site custom built will get very expensive very quickly.

My old man is a fan of telling me I should be learning it, but I've tried for a few weeks (as well as when I first posted years ago) and I just can't, I understand roughly how it all fits together but I'm not able to sit patiently for weeks and plod along at it. I wish I could, patience is not a strong point.

I've google for classifieds websites, many results are wordpress related, is this normal? a simple template I can tweak images of and in time have bits built around sounds ideal.

Kickstart once spent many hours sending various snippets over messages educating me, but it doesn't sink in. I really need something as a base to use, before it can be built up

Wordpress themes on there are so good these days, you have to ask yourself the question... do you want a completely bespoke site? or do you want something pre-made but modified to your needs?

The average small - medium business user just want something that looks great with their colours and branding on there and if it keeps costs down, they like it even more.

Want something completely bespoke with bespoke functionality and features? Pull your wallet out and be prepared to spend big.

I work exclusively with Wordpress these days. I used to use all kinds of things but WP will do pretty much anything you need.

Theme Forest has some impressive themes on there and don't be put off by the fact it's only $40-$60, they build these complex themes with all the premium features you'd expect but sell in volume. I believe one of the best sellers is @ 190,000 units.

In my experience, you won't find a better solution for the price bracket and WP + a premium theme like this, you don't even need to know HTML / CSS these days, the options panels, drag and drop page builders will take care of it all.

As long as people can list their own cars/bikes to start with, the platform isn't important. Long term though, it needs to be custom.

Simple? Wordpress can be as complex as you want it to be.

Start off with one of them top themes, compare the features and make sure it has most of what you want, they usually cover most bases when aiming a theme at the masses for a particular niche.

See how you get on for a few months, you will be pleasantly surprised I think. Your users will highlight any short falls and you can begin deciding what needs to be implemented.

You don't need to have something completely bespoke made unless what you've got can't be customised by a developer to suit your needs.

i.e. If it was 90% of what you need, hire a dev to add the 10% on to the existing WP site.

If it's the complete opposite of what you need, then it's time to go bespoke.

There may also be some really good turnkey solutions out there.
