There was a Tfl online survey of bikers in November - some of us participated https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=308413&highlight=survey Tfl published the results today in this report titled "Easy Rider" (ho ho) https://www.london.gov.uk/sites/default/files/easy_rider_improving_motorcycle_safety2.pdf

They've grabbed some headlines by saying that deaths are increasing - 27 in 2014, 36 in 2015. But the report says they don't have enough info to know why. Then they wheel out all the usual stuff about education and awareness.

Perhaps the most interesting thing in the report is lots of emphasis about the inconsistency in bus lane rules. They say this was mentioned by lots of the 1,200 bikers who were surveyed. I wonder if anything will change? Tfl can't compel the boroughs to allow bikes in bus lanes, and the boroughs will probably say they can't afford to change the signage and the road markings. Maybe Tfl will give them some money?

Perhaps there's other interesting stuff in the report - I gave up on it due to severe boredom.

You don't need a survey to figure it out. Money is tight, smaller roads with higher congestion charges, rail prices through the roof to pay for the re-generation of the infrastructure and the weather's been pretty good.

More people on bikes including ones who are not confident but are forced into choosing the cheapest transport. I notice they haven't even waited for Easter this year. The roads are getting busy with wobbly head-shakers and Rossi wannabes

More idiots = more deaths.
It's not rocket science.
*shrug*

The two-wheeled idiot quotient around town has definitely increased due to it being considered cheaper than bringing a car into the congestion zone.

Aha, Operation Winchester. It targets pedestrians and cyclists as well as bikers. In Brixton it seems to amount to ten PCSOs, plus a couple of real police to supervise, standing around at busy junctions in the rush hour, pulling cyclists over for a lecture about high viz.

This bit caught my eye:
Quote:
"motorcycles can help reduce congestion, particularly by encouraging their use an alternative to larger commercial vehicles."
The committee found that White Van Man is one of two groups responsible for increased congestion. (The other group is Uber cars.) So they want the next mayor to persuade tradesmen and delivery drivers to swap their vans for bikes. I've seen a plumber in London with a GS - he has the fattest panniers ever. I wonder how the Mayor could boost this sort of thing? How about relaxing parking restrictions for 'commercial bikes'?

There's a fairly long fat cylinder mounted on the bike - he could have lengths of pipe stored in it.

Anyone watching 24 Hours in A & E? There's a biker with a smashed jaw. The staff are a bit stunned that he was wearing a "half helmet" which was undamaged in his accident. The guy hit a car and made a dent in it with his chin. Eek - my helmet is open face. It does have a small chin bar though.

I wonder how many emergency callouts can be dealt with by means of soldering kit, some pipe fittings and a drain snake? You dont need a lot of kit to sort leaks and blockages. And people are willing to pay for being there fast.

I made the mistake of using the one bus lane in Doncaster that is open to bikes todaynas the traffic was horrible.. A balding man in a mercedes pulled out ahead of me, blocked the bus lane and started shouting that i wasnt allowed to use the bus lane. I wonder whether contributory factors to any of the fatalities were malinformed vigilantes attempting to enforce bus lane rules?

Rolling Eyes Blame the biker, as usual.

I know, lets pull over all the women in short skirts and give them a lecture on avoiding dark alleyways too.

Anyway, who says 36 deaths a year is unacceptable?

As a biker who rides through London every day, 36 deaths in a year doesn't seem all that bad to me, I'm willing to bet that there are more than a million individual motorcycle journeys made within London each year. I'm happy enough with those odds.

I beg to differ. With women who know nothing about bikes, a Harley is by far and away the bestest fluff magnet.

When I rule the world I'll definitely be using my Glock to indicate which loud pipes are pleasing to the ear.

But it will cure you of being distracted by them.

Some insist it's genetic, but I still believe that Harley can be caught.
