Aye, back from Dubai on 24th, after a few days will be hunting around for a nice GREEN ZX6R.

Anyone got any tips or things to look out for when checking out these bikes? eg, any particular weak points or gremlins?
Lokking to spend 3 grand max so what kind of milage/age should I be looking at???

Thanks in advance.

Hey, good choice! Thumbs Up

You could probably pick up a newer model than mines. I ride 98 G1 model.

You could probably get a 2000 bike with FSH for that kind on money. The newer bikes are slightly lighter, more powerful and have a nicer front end (up-dated lights).

I've had no problems what-so-ever with mines so dunno about any faults which these bikes may have. I have nothing to report. I would try get a test ride on one tho. The brakes (6-pots up front) as good as they are, are prone to binding on and need overhauled at least once a year. They are also difficult to set-up if they ain't stopping right (lack of lever feel).

Also check the valve shims and clearance's have been done every 8k miles or it will run like shit.

I have no complaints with mines, goes well, comfy, reliable, still looks good for an older bike, parts and insurance is very reasonable, really have nothing bad to say about them... Thumbs Up

Nice bikes. Mr. Green

For that you should be able to get a 2000/2001 J model (twin headlights). I found a '99 G2 about a month ago for £2,250 in VGC.

FSH, if it has actually been looked after then it doesn't matter if the little book has been stamped by Kawasaki, if they've got a big pile of receipts and its running well then thats fine.

Good forum about them is MCN Ninjas and you'll be able to find answers to pretty much any question you've got about them there.

cc123, if the valves and shims aren't done then its not quite as shit as you make out, my ZX6R didn't have them done ever and it ran fine (until it commited suicide Razz ).

Faults, nothing that springs to mind, its the same as any bike, if its been looked after then no problems.

I noticed the difference when mines was done, due done again soon but better to maintain now rather than pay for it later when things go boom!

Its not quite as bad as it sounds....

The clutch basket decided that it would be happier in lots of small pieces at about 21,000 miles which meant to get engine working again cleaning all the little bits of metal out of the oil round the engine. Or for £500 I got a engine which wasn't even run in yet and managed to sell the fucked one for £250. If I had spent ages fixing the engine it was still long overdue a service which would have cost more than £500.

So it was far cheaper than servicing. Razz

I got my 2000 J1 zx6r for £3000 - it was in great condition, MOT for 10 months, and had 12000 miles on the clock. The 2000 model is the one that changed to the double headlights rather than the single, but it didn't change to the more racy riding position until... 2002 (? might be wrong about that). That's why I liked it, double headlights, racy but not too much so!

Still a sporty bike which will keep up with most things but even if your doing distance it can cope well too. Seat is fairly comfy, riding postion will suit most riders big or small.....

I got a 2001 J2 for that price with some scratches down one panel. It's only 33bhp so i can't comment on power. Although the delivery was sooooooooooooooooo much smoother than my gsxr400. Very comfortable as well. You can also get about 120 miles out of a tank. Thumbs Up
