I'm think my number plate has been stolen, I'm sure it was on when I left work and when I arrived at Aldi about a mile away as I put my helmet and gloves on the floor next to the rear wheel.

Came out a few minutes later and the number plate and L plate were gone and had snapped off the bracket.

I thought they must have snapped off on the way (didn't even think about anyone snapping it off) so I went back and forth on the road to Aldi 4 times, the speed limits were 40mph max and I went along at 20 checking for plate and pulling over if cars were behind.

What should I do? give the police my reg number and tell them I think someone else is using it?

I did pass a police car while I was searching for the plate and was tempted to turn around and tell them but I don't know the reg and was worried they might not let me ride home.

Call 101, get a crime number for it, do it now. Don't sound unsure about what happened, and insist on getting a number. Like as not, they nicked it on their way to commit some villainy. Even if it's still villainy-in-potentia, once the NIPs and parking fines start coming in, it'll be too late to plead "yeahbut".

Anyone could just get a plate with your number off ebay - there are no checks.

I've done that now Smile , the person I spoke to was really helpful but I didn't like them asking for a description of the bike. Also partially thinking no one took the plate and it just fell off, the police said they'd contact Aldi to see if they can see the CCTV footage and it will be embarrassing if they find that I never had a plate at all.

I'm at least happy the police have put a marker on the plate so even if it did fall off and some scrote decides to use it then they will get caught and I have a crime number so I won't get fucked.

Just remember, the numberplate was there this morning when you did your pre-ride checks Thumbs Up

And time. It would be a couple of days minimum to obtain one. Simpler to steal one and double sided velcro it over the top of theirs immediately

The numberplate bracket was aluminium and twisted, very easy to break off or fall off

It is much easier to take a number plate with an L plate already on and stick it to a scooter than to buy a fake plate, buy an L plate, stick the two together then hope the plate you faked doesn't cancel tax/ insurance.

but I don't live in a big crime filled city with scooter criminals.

Did anyone notice that English ISIS-lovers are planning drive-by shootings on mopeds? A dodgy-plate ANPR bleep might get the armed response units after you. Takes me back to the days when white vans were all potential IRA bombs - they were always being stopped near terrorist targets. I knew a guy who was stopped outside Charing Cross station - all these blokes with submachine guns shouting at him and demanding to know where he was going. They didn't react well when he answered "Heaven". He was delivering speakers to the famous bum bandits' night club of that name.

I never seem to get police behind me so I think I'll be okay, there isn't really anything they can check, for example my brakes are really bad but the cops aren't going to hop on and test them, my lights work fine so I should be good and they won't check my snapped speedo cable Laughing .

Plastic number plate bolts are fragile. I took my number plate and l plate off on a gate post and didn't notice until i got chased down by plod in panda car. He was furiously running plate through blackberry and unable to type accuratley on the thing. Having licence, insurance and photocopy of cbt cert and counterpart was much diffusing of the situation.

If you do get tugged, then thank the nice officer for looking out for you. For once, it'll actually be true. You'll want to keep a note of the crime number to hand or at least the time and date that you reported it, just to nip any potential suspicions in the bud.

Best of luck.

This all makes for a good argument to have a tiny illegal number plate in the first place.
