optimate cable powering satnav

i'm going to fit a permanent usb socket to the bike, for satnav and phones etc.

i currently have an optimate cable permanently fitted which has a 2 pin square plug and thought to save removing this and adding a new cable it would be great if i could use this cable for my needs.

2 questions...

1. whats the 2 pin plug called
2. can i use this to feed power to a satnav
3. if this is possible, will it still cause a drain on the battery when satnav cable unplugged, presume it wont.

Any help appreciated.

I believe it is known as a "Tamiya" connector.

You can buy a lead from Optimate that will plug into your permanent lead and provide a cigarette lighter socket, which can be used with chargers of whatever. I think they also do a USB connector lead too.

Yes, you can use it to charge or power your sat-nav (I do). My sat-nav charger has a small LED on it which lights up when plugged it, so it will drain the battery given time, even if the sat-nav is not plugged in.

Anyone know if you can get a capped version of that connector?

I used one to make an optimate style cable for my Halfords battery charger but when not on charge i have a blank connector wrapped in tape plugged in, would prefer a neater solution for when not on charge.

edit: i think that will only work if you have the optimate type plug for the cap to fit over, depends on what you've fitted really i guess.

weasley you are a star! Thats the one, lighter would be fine but i'll try and find a usb one.

t121anf : mine currently has a rubber cap over the end, so its weather proof. Came with the optimiser.

i presume if i unplug everything from this lead, then no drain will happen? it will only drain when something is connected up is that correct?

Yes, no drain if nothing is connected

I do the same on my ZX12 - Soldered up a lead with a Tamiya connector one end and a waterproof lighter socket the other end. I use the car sat-nav in a waterproof case and the car adapter for power, all the spare wire and the cigarette socket get stuffed in the tank bag.

Thanks for the above comments but mine is literally one of the connectors in the pic but with no wires.

The new optimate chargers are coming with a different style connector now. Not that it matters if you've got the old one but it meant I had to mess about feeding a new lead in as I have the connector under the pillion seat.

I've got 3 of the optimate plugs wired on my bike. 2 connected to a relay so they only power up with ignition on, the third, under seat is for when connected to charger and leaving stuff under the seat to charge when i'm away from the bike.

I've made up various attachments to plug into them, cigi sockets, clothing plugs, usb sockets and a 10m extension to run led lights and charger when camping.

Buy 10 plugs on ebay for about the same cost as one pair from maplin
