Looking to spend not TOO much on a router with:
Half decent wifi
A VPN server.
3G fail-over, ideally through an Android phone via USB.

Any recommendations?

Draytek 2820? I've never had much of an issue with Draytek + easy to configure/use.

Cheers - the 2830N seems to be the one that offers the best value and available reasonably priced second hand etc - ideally I'd like AC, but can't find the 2860AC cheap - about £250. With some 2830Ns selling for £200 less than that, doesn't seem worth it.

If anyone else has got suggestions of others that tick all the boxes, interested to hear!

I've been happy with my Draytek. I'm on an older 2850n which I got when I was on FTTC because it could natively handle VDSL. I'm back on ADSL after I moved house, but it's still a great little router and I would definitely buy another if this one died.

The features I like include multiple simultaneous SSIDs so I've configured SSIDs to match all my family's WiFi. I leave them turned off normally, but it's useful to switch them on at Christmas, birthdays etc so everyone's kit just works and I don't have to hand out my connection details.

The NAT and firewall work well together to put together pretty complex rules with nice and granular conditions.

Never tried the 3G fail over, but I can see it being an advantage if you absolutely have to guarantee a connection.

We've got a couple of 2820s at work.

The load balancer / fail over is terrible. We've had to turn it off and manually switch WANs on / off when there's some issue.

Other than that, it's served us well.

I had a 2920n at home for some years and never had any problems with it. Until I needed 5ghz because the baby monitor Interfering with 2.4.

The fail over thing only works if the connection is dropped. So if the issue is at the exchange, or further in (routing or DNS or whateverthefucktheyvedonethistime) it doesn't know there's anything wrong and hence doesn't switch. So, not stateful packet inspection. However, I agree it's the only really serious contender in the market right now. I'd even suggest using one without an AP and getting something to handle wireless separately, wireless isn't their strong point.
