I’m basically looking to ditch sky, ideally would like to be able to still record programs from Freeview/watch tv as normal.
However it would be nice to be able to access kodi or the like from the box... is there anything as such?
Been told to look at Sick Beard/couchpotato which on first look looks like sickbeared would be great for effectively series linking programs.
Will I be looking at 2 boxes or is there an all in one that I could use? This would be going in to the AV amp so hdmi/surround/dolby blah blah would be preferred. NAS is available on the network for it to use/access if needed.
Any pointers of what’s currently out there and what to be looking at.

Guessing easy way is one of them android kodi boxes from egay and a newsgroup subscription is the way forward.

Nah.
RPi and install OSMC. Easier process than getting out of bed in the morning.
The installation process is literally:
1) Insert SD card to computer
2) Run automated installer
3) Insert card to Pi
4) Turn on Pi
I've installed mine with CouchPotato (movie downloads), Sonarr (TV series downloads), Headphones (Music downloads, but not great), Transmission (Torrents), and finally Sabnzdb (Usenet, but it's no longer used). Out of that list, the only two that get commonly used are Sonarr and Transmission.
It's configured to automatically download the latest episodes for any TV show that I am watching. Sonnar takes care of finding out when its out, downloading it, seeding it, and importing it to my library. The only thing I have to do is tell it which sites to look on for releases, and what keywords must appear in a release for me to download it.
Setting up all of the software I'm running is a pain. However to set up only Sonarr and Transmission would be quite easy to do.
It's far more convenient having this setup than actually watching TV. I don't have to schedule my life around what's on, I just turn on my TV every now and then and see if there's anything new for me to watch.

Ok, so a pi over an android box then.
Been playing with my NAS and have set up sickbeard, couch potato etc on there so that does all the downloading and storage, so will just literally need something to pull it from the NAS to the AV amp (the smart tv in the bedroom can do it direct).

I prefer Sonarr to Sickbeard.
I used Sickbeard for quite a while, it works well, but doesn't offer much when something goes wrong.
If Sickbeard finds a bad release, or can't find a release, you're stuck doing it on the computer and manually sending it to the Pi. You don't have much control over what exactly it downloads. If you delete a bad release, it'll happily re-download the bad release.
Sonarr offers the same functionality, however you have the ability the manually pick a release and the ability to blacklist a bad release. Additionally you can just drop files to the nzbdrone folder and it'll automatically import them for you.
Sickbeard is good, but IMO Sonarr is better!
