So, he kept stolen bikes at his own place, used an address and ebay account connected to himself and sold to a dealer.

The really worrying thing to my mind is that the Met was employing someone as dumb as that with so little idea of how criminality is likely to work!

Unfortunately police officers arent paid enough for such to be an attractive option for smart and honest people. The job is it's own reward, which selects for idealists (which it crushes) the corrupt and the stupid.

There is, however, a huge issue for a not so smart copper attempting to shift hot property: anyone mildly successful at fencing stolen goods will likely be able to smell bacon a mile away.

I used to know some people that worked in a police training facility on the admin side. They said the vast majority that went through didn't meet the required grades, but were still passed because there just wasn't enough people that could legitimately pass.

I think it's fair to say that guy has no luck at all, which is in no small part due his own stupidity.

His mother in-law wins £4m on the lottery so his wife leaves him (not sure if before or after the win) and is bank rolled by her mum into ensuring he gets f'all access to his kids.
He's clearly not the most moral person in the world and not that bright, so he starts selling off stuff from the evidence / confiscated vehicles storage to fund his legal bills.
Gets caught when everyone starts asking where all the stuff's gone.

I'm going to assume (although I could be wrong) that he won't be welcomed back into plodforce, and he isn't going to get far with his custody hearings, or many visits from the kids while he's inside.

I could almost feel sorry for him if he wasn't such a corrupt and monumental f'tard.

Having been the victim of theft, and know the feels it brings, nothing justifies his actions. However his situation is mighty sad, it's always the children that end up bearing the brunt, whether immediately or later in life when they haven't had a positive male role model around

Then decides to get one over on him, to keep the kids away, knowing a judge almost always rules in favour of the woman? In his utter desperation he sees a way to potentially pay his court costs and allows his better judgement to be overruled by the love of his kids?

Historically judges favour mothers over fathers in custody hearings. This is not the same over access. A child will not have access to either parent revoked without there being strong evidence that said parent was endangering child. Being a criminal scumbag is no bar to access. Yes, it is a child's right to acces their parent. If the pig in question was being denied access it is likely there is a reason. Perhaps domestic violence that was being conveniently ignored by local police force for reasons that couldn't possibly be related to the agressor's place of employment.
