Hello all. I would like to start by saying that this is my first time trying to work on any type of motorcycle. I do have some mechanical repair experience but never on a bike.

So I have a 1988 cbr400r that I crashed with last week. I am trying to search for parts so I can know how much it will set me back to repair and if it is worth doing so. I noticed that there are different part names for the cbr400 so I checked my frame and found that it's number starts with NC23.

My question is, will all parts labeled NC23 fit my old motorcycle? Or do I still have to search for them according to the year of manufacture of the bike?

Thank you all.

The NC23 was pretty much the same for its two years in production except paint schemes.

That's good, I was not sure if they all fit cause the front fairing brackets I found on ebay don't look exactly the same. Cash is very tight as well, really don't want to buy stuff that doesn't fit.

Do you have any experience with these bikes? I notice that theres vent holes on each side of the front fairing, next to the holes where the headlights come in. There's this plastic "piping" (for lack of a better word) that goes from the vent holes to holes in the thick aluminium frame. I have one thats missing on one side due to the crash. What are those called? I don't think they come with the fairing and I don't know what to type in to search for them on ebay.

Thanks for the help, already put my mind at ease to know all NC23 parts fit my bike.

Hi

CMSNL might have the bits you need (not cheap though), but also the parts lists they have online might help you:-

https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cbr400rrj-nc23-japanese-domestic_model17064/partslist/

All the best

Thank you mrbox, that is exactly the part I was talking about.

Yeah cmsnl was a great help with getting an idea what my bike part number was and what parts I might need to fix it. Too bad that as you said, they are expensive, I would have bought everything from them for more piece of mind.

Thank you guys, I will keep in touch as to how my repairs are coming

I think an update is in order.

I bought a starter switch before anything else just to see if my bike fires up allright. Thank god it did. Couldn't rev it much due to the broken right handlebar and damaged cable but from the little extra gas the choke gave I am pretty confident that my engine is OK.

I am now trying to buy all the stuff I need to make it roadworthy, which is not as easy as I first thought it was gonna be. Having some trouble finding original parts and even what some parts are called. I will be trying to find someone locally who knows his shit, maybe he can shove me in the right direction.

I will post again as things progress, so far things seem to have taken a turn for the better if I ignore the financial nightmare that has yet to come.

Whoa, this is much better than cms exploded view. Thanks! My eyes hurt much less now.

Does anyone know if the throttle tube from any other NC model fits an NC 23? having trouble sourcing one.

Bought both gas cables complete with housing and also a right handlebar, waiting for delivery. When I manage to find the throttle tube the bike will be operational if all goes well. Obviously still need to buy other stuff like signals and check others like brake lights headlights etc to be able to drive it in the road.

Hi , have bought parts from China before, take a little time to arrive. But have a look at
www.400greybike.com

There are a few things on Aliexpress, just takes a while to get here ,the NC23 also covers the Aero which is NC23 some parts are interchangeable but not all , and some with the NC29 , but be careful try and get 88-89, which are more specific to the bike you`ve got. Example
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Throttle-Cable-For-Honda-CBR400-NC23-1987-1989-Black-BS1/322028203789?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131017132637%26meid%3D2ece01d95c1e4c6580c4563d96250c08%26pid%3D100033%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D322028203789
I am restoring a Hondacbr400rr j 88 if theres anything I can help you with let me know.

Hi , if you go to any cross reference sites you will probably see that your part number wont be recognized, this is because these bike are Grey imports and the european sites aren`t updated to that fact , although you will find the parts on David Silver , CMNSL, Lings, all will say out of stock, for a grip tube you need to look at 7/8 or 22m grip tubes with dual cables, if Vincent is sending you one just ask if its the above size

Hi Vincent , yeh probably show you all the 1988 bikes under honda, but I`ll bet the 400rr isnt there, got this resto going on and with stripping it I measure all the bearings and sizes to make sure I can get a replacement for it , alot of parts do cross over but arent listed anywhere but if you`ve got the sizes you can match them up

If there is a bike breaker anything like locally, a trip out there carrying the parts you damaged and vernier calipers may yeild rewards. Throttle twist tubes are reasonably compatible across bikes. Mostly the difference is in the size if the operating cam. A smaller one gives you more rotation for the same throttle opening, a larger one gives you less rotation for the same throttle opening. I have been swapping mine about to get slightly faster actions. Going too large may lead to problems. The (allegedly) R1 tube i had kicking around turned my bandit throttle into an on/off switch. Dislike.

Yeah, I bought those cables already complete with housing. Good to know that some of the NC29 stuff does actually fit with mine. I've been paying close attention to ebay, maybe one just pops up but so far, no cigar.

@talktothehat

Unfortunately the tube that was installed lost the part where the cables attach in the crash. I can get the diameter of the tube from it but I think I would need more to go on to see if a tube from another bike actually fits. I'm just guessing here I've never worked on any type of bike before.

@ Vincent

That would be very kind of you. If you think it fits on my bike I am willing to give it a try.

Edit:

Just my luck, he turned out banned. Lol
