I was turning right at a small round-a-bout with my right hand indicator on (as you should) then as I past the last junction before my ju7nction I indicated left to show I was turning off! an L plate driver procceeded to drive onto the round a bout at a snail pace she and the instructor were just looking at me. What could I do I was in mid lean and could'nt just stop on the round a bout I finally got her to stop and I pulled off.
What are dual controls for and why the hell did they just look at me as though I was wrong...ggrrr tats thekind of thing the car instructors should be stopping not helping along!!

When i did my CBT the instructor kept slagging off all the the road user that were making mistake, "just ignore that wanker" as a car over took me on a corner. Laughing

I don't know what to do in that situation as im the learner, just remember what the 'L' stands for as it shows that we are shit riders.

Like today, i was glad the car drivers were calm when i managed to stall my bike on a 3 laned road, as the traffic lights turned green. After finally finding the neutral gear (took a minute or so), then the bike failing to start i didnt have a clue what to do as i was stuck, and i couldn't pull over. finally i managed to bump start the bike and ride away, my most stressful time on a bike so far, after binning it.

It was a car learner but it was the fact that she kept coming slowly so I was not sure where to go! and the instructor has pedals to stop the car if needs be!
Also it ws the look I got as if I was in the wrong the kind of oh it's a biker they are always wrong attitude I hate it.

You can't really tar every L plate rider/driver with the same brush, i reckon there's quite a few L plate riders that are better than some full licence owners, both in skill and safety. This will obviously only be a rare occurence but it still happens.

Not all driving school cars have dual controls.

She might even have been on her test (which would explain why the passenger was not giving the learner instructions) in which case the examiner would only take control as a last resort but you can be sure that she would have failed and been told why.

I find old blokes (very old, older than me) to be the worst, they stop on main roads to wave people out of side streets, go around roundabouts on the outside all the way round and are generally completely oblivious to what's going on around them.

If I see an old boy with a hat on I worry.

ok my bad it was'nt aimed at all L-platers!
Just nearly being knocked off the bike at 5 MPH is annoying when it is a mini round about and everything can be seen. I am sure it had been discussed where the brake pedal is.
Anyway rant over

The learner wasnt really in the wrong. All learners and clueless ideots, thats what being a learner is. The instructor was in the wrong for not stepping in.

I had to be on my toes yesterday, due to a learner/instructor combination nearly changing into the lane that I was occupying. I'm sure the instructor ever hit the brakes or told the driver to stop (that's what all cars need Thumbs Up). The amazing thing was at the time I was riding in a 4 lane road. I was in the left hand lane, which is controlled by a give way sign, and was about to turn left. They were in the 3rd lane, which is controlled by a set of traffic lights, which were red at the time. Out of the blue this driver proceeded to cut across 2 lanes into the lane I was in.

We all do silly things when we are learner drivers, a mixture of nerves and not knowing what you are doing.

I have to dodge more bad drivers than learner drivers though.

Every other day we hear of road rage incidents, bad driving and moments of madness on the roads....

Get used to it!!! It's the world we live in today. The roads are full of wankers and you just have to deal with it. Everyone believes they are right and your wrong.

I must admit I'm more patient with learner drivers and riders under instruction.
I almost get a smug self-satisfaction by being so forgiving! Wink

Last Saturday, I was riding through a residential area with cars parked on the right hand side of the road. A learner driver in a school of motoring car was coming towards me, I slowed down a tad even though it was my right of way, just to see what the learner would do next. Bloody good job I did too, cos he suddenly had a panic and pulled out into the road and drove past me with inches to spare with his eyes fixed on the raod ahead, grimly gripping the wheel.
Shocked
As they went past the instructor held up a hand in a 'thanks/sorry' type gesture and then put his hand to his forehead, across his brow in a rather 'God help me' sort of way.

I see a lot of L platers round my way, cos I live near Pompey test centre and am on the test routes. I do have a certain sympathy when I'm sat behind some poor sod in a car with a fluoro clothed bod with a clipboard sat next to them stalling the car for the 6th time trying to get out of an uphill junction. Embarassed

The thing with L plates is that they just mean 'learner' - you don't know if it's some poor soul out on the road for the very first time and completely terrified, or someone on their last lesson before their test, who's very able and very confident.

I give them all a wide berth (bikes too) and treat them as if they're likely to do something spectacularly stupid.

We were all learners once. Karma

Finally, someone agree's with me!!! Laughing

You where all learners once before so it's best to give them respect as I'm sure you all wished for when you where learning. Only the other day I was stuck behind a learner. I was in no rush so sat behind her for the best part of 3 miles (at 30 mph, try do that now!!) Turns out it was my best mates girl on a lesson, good job I didn't pass her, might not have got invited round again for a while!

OK missing the point here!
I do look out for everything on the road and I did'nt pay a huge amount of money for bike training for nothing.
The point I was making was nothing about the learner driver it was the fact that the instructor done nothing about it and even looked disgusted at me!

I am only typing things like this up as I feel it's good to tell ppl whats what on the roads then others can be aware of these things. In the future I might not bother!
Anyway like I said above I typed it just after it happened you are normally fired up about things now I calmed down!

^^^^ No, I got the point but why get angry about it...

As I said, people always think they are right, including the instructor! Lot of tossers out there, he just happened to be one of them......

Just putting it down to one of those life learning things. Not getting angry about it was more pised off with the guy on a one way street on his mobile nearly driving into my mate when he came around a corner.

Anyway enough negative I am off out for a ride!

I agree that the instructor in your situation should have had more awareness.
Many of the instructors I've encountered recently have been most apologetic when their charges have fucked up, and quick to thank when I've shown a bit of understanding.

But let's be honest, you probably need balls of steel to sit next to many of the muppets let loose on the roads. On one occasion I've even seen an instructor grab the wheel as a student decided to meander onto the opposite side of the road for no reason whatsoever. You should at least be able to drive in a straight line safetly before going onto the public highway. Is there no CBT/off road training for drivers nowadays? I learned in a clapped out VW Beetle nearly 14 years ago.

My nerves would be shot to shreds, even if I had the infinite patience required to teach someone to pilot a ton of steel around.

I only passed my car test last week, but I agree completely. It's the instructors job to keep their students to quiet areas until they're confident/safe enough to go somewhere highly populated.

I think you were just unlucky, I believe (as probably do all 18 year olds) that my driving is of a high standard, but there are always some that will freeze like a rabbit in the headlights when they reach an obsticle in driving.
