The 954 is causing me some more issues and it's only been on the road for a few weeks Shocked ...

Tl;DR:
Bike misfires, dash loses power/flickers but if rev'd the dash comes back to life. The bike eventually dies either way, whether I keep on the revs or just let it idle. If I turn the ignition off and back on again the bike's completely fine... but the problem then repeats itself roughly every mile. 2003 Fireblade.

The full story:
Yesterday on my way back from work (only a 2 mile commute) the bike started to misfire and the misfires felt like they were getting worse and worse, the bike eventually cuts out.

I switched the ignition off then back on again immediately after it cut out and restarted the bike. The bike fired right up and rev'd freely, no misfiring, it ran fine. So I continued to go home and then just as I got to the top of my road the bike repeated what it done about 1 mile earlier and eventually cut out as I got home.

This morning the bike started (albeit struggled to crank, but did eventually start first push of the button). Rode to work, all was good.

On my lunch today (about an hour ago), I thought i'd take the bike out and see if it'd repeat yesterdays antics... it did about a mile into my ride. I paid more attention to what the bike was doing this time and pulled over when it started misfiring.

While the bike misfires, I notice the dash starts to flicker between being on and off. If I rev the bike the dash goes back to normal, if I let it idle the dash will flicker even worse and the revs start to drop and then it'll cut out. But as soon as I restart the bike, it's fine, no issues.

I'm thinking maybe reg/rec, loose connection somewhere or stator? Any other thoughts?

Getting a multi-meter on it tonight and will come back with readings.

Yeah loose/dodgy connection.

As it is EVERYTHING going off I wouldn't bother with a multimeter to start with.

Clean up and check the battery and solenoid contacts and any earth straps. Also check the fuse box for loose connections. See if that does it.

If it doesn't take the tank off and put the ignition on, wiggle and move every connector you see trying to make something happen if you find the dodgy one happy days. If not strip, inspect and clean every connector block. (probably worth doing this anyway) IF they doesnt sort it then bust out the multimeter and wiring diagram.

The 2 times I've had similar Symptoms one was the start solenoid one was the earth strap.

edit the above is assuming the battery is fine. I don't think the reg rec would give an intermittent problem if the battery is OK.

Yeah, I'd go with reg/rec leaving you with no juices.

Check battery but also check that lovely troublesome loom around the headstock and back of the dash.

Same as above I`d check reg/rec along with the stator , at least connections first

Who were they? They obviously didn't know about the infamous Honda dodgy electrics. Wink

Could be the stator or the reg/reg. Go through it checking the connections and see if any of them are fried or melted.

The battery terminal screws were a bit loose, tightened them up and took a reading.

14.4 @ 4K rpm
12.8 @ Rest

I'll take the bike out when the traffic calms down & see if any things changed.

Glad you sorted it on the cheap Wink now fit some decent tires on it!!! Oh and every fireblade from 92-2001 cooked its reg rectifier! Replaced with either different ones from Suzuki or Yamaha or aftermarket ones and didn't have the same problem again.....till I bought another fireblade/vfr750 etc

TBH you end up spending the £200 either way.

With the honda, it's a one-off for the reg/rec

With the yammy, it's the constant use of oil.

(I've left a gap for Suzuki and Kawasaki)
