Looking to finally get myself another motorcycle after living here in Canada for almost three years. Unfortunately the province l live in (Saskatchewan) has only one insurance company which is government owned. And they dont like bikes hence why its around $2000-3500 a year to get insurance/registration on anything bigger than 400cc or less than 30 years old.

This also screws up bike values for example a high mileage 1986 GPZ900R selling for the same price as low mileage 2004 ZX10R which alone is still more expensive than what you would pay in the UK Rolling Eyes

Any recommendations for a descent sports/sport-tourer from the 80,s?

Why do you have to get your insurance from within the province ?

With the net these days, can you not get your insurance elsewhere?

Might that make your biking cheaper?

So if you bought a bike in Vancouver and insured it to an address there, you would have to cancel the policy and take out a new Sescatchewn state policy if you moved there?

I went 12 years ago to Canada for 3weeks, was unaware of such silly laws and rules though. From what I remember apart from construction sites for housing and a large powerstation plant there was nothing at all in Fort Sescatchewn though, except a small shopping zone, Motels and a few out law bikers.

Much preferred Vancouver and it's more American style.

GPz 550. Thumbs Up

There are quite a lot of GPz's on the continent. I used to be a member of GPz550 forum (USA/Canada based) and those lads even raced on the 550's. Easy to keep the good times roll, a lot of spares around and fun enough to ride.

You could try moving? Surely the crap weather and short riding season is bad enough! To be fair, the climate is similar here in Norway, as is the pricing. Luckily I still have family and my license registered in the UK so that's where I buy my bikes. Consider out of state if possible.

Ignoring the engine limitation and going with the 80's theme, get a Kawasaki GPZ900R!

If you're looking at 30 years old, don't bother looking for a specific bike. Anything of that sort of age could be good or awful depending on condition, and condition is important - some parts will be either unavailable or really expensive.

Also worth avoiding things with really oddball tyre sizes, because you'll find there's only one manufacturer still making tyres in that size and they're probably BT45s.

On a general note, 80s bike famously had more engine than the chassis could deal with. This makes naked bikes with plenty of torque desirable. UJMs were quite good in the 80s. Often best the avoid the biggest and smallest engine sizes in any range - the small ones were underpowered, the big ones lacked the brakes and suspension to keep up. So CB650/750 over 550/900.

Or just don't bother. Get a snowmobile for winter instead.

To be fair, all things considered,
this could break even/save monkey on a modern sports bike!

Its a bit depressing to hear how bad it sounds over there?
Greener grass always makes me think of these places (US/Ca/Auz) as being so much better than the UK but realistically I think its more there weather and that's about it. They all seem to have their own problems and from the sound of it Canada sounds as monopolized as the US....

Harsh beans.

Any particular reason why or is it just the usual shite that make them hate bikes?
Any particular ministers/governors who have a bee in their bonnet about bikes?

A mate mentioned that Motor Bikes aren't allowed in one of the big Canadian cities (a French one I think).
Is that correct?
