New job starting so off I move.

I'm looking for advice on areas to live or not in/around Derby (prefferably within 10 miles).

I hear Little Eaton up to Belper are the nicer parts? Anyone confirm or deny this or suggest other places?

Thanks for any help.

I've heard there are some nice parts but when I visited there wasn't anywhere that particularly stood out. I'm in Notts currently.

Fisty is from Derby, although not for a few years now.

I'm from derby,

Dont go to Normanton
Dont go to Allenton

Duffield is the nicest area but the most pricey, Belper is nice just a bit out from the city centre about 30 mins

Little Eaton is similar to duffield, recently excluded from Ecclsebourne secondary school catchment area so prices are cheaper.

Littleover is alright
Mickleover is alright
Shardlow is nice

I'm from Belper so a bit biased....

Belper is nice, a mix of new and old, plenty of shops bars pubs etc. Avoid the parks estate.

Little Eaton again is nice but has nothing other than a couple of pubs and inbreeding.

Ripley/Heanor/Langley Mill. Avoid like the plague. They are dead towns, nothing but bookies and pound shops. Large amounts of unemployment and a large BNP following.

How could I forget ilkeston??

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/welcome-to-cracktown-hundreds-of-users-and-party-bags-on-sale-for-10-324642.html

Avoid.

The only good thing about Ilkeston is the MFN pub with it's bike nights in the summer. 500+ bikes on a wednesday night is always fun.

Most of the ex-mining towns are now shitholes. Are you looking for town or village life?

I rented a house in Castle Donington for a year or so. Nice place to live, track next door, airport is perpendicular to the village so not much noise from aircraft.

Thanks for the help.

I'm moving from London (where I've lived all my life) so somewhere not too far in the sticks is what I'm after. I do much prefer a slightly slower pace of life though so will have a look around.

Thanks for the help so far. Great link Shaggy! Thumbs Up

Belper or Ilkeston are your best bet.
Just watch out of old mining towns as some have a high crime rate and look generally shit, and get used to saying "aup me duck"
Also get up into the peak district on your bike but watch out for the cops and average speed cameras.

Ilkeston should be a wonderful little town full of traditional, working class people going about their business like anyone else. Instead what you have is a chav-infested hole of a town full of alarmingly young teenage mothers who care more about their next sexual conquest or the text message they have just received on their mobiles, than they do about the poor child in the filthy pushchair in front of them. Next to these frightening, cheap gold-chain-wearing pieces of filth, there will almost always be a male chav of even more frightening proportions. With scabs around his mouth, the obligatory white tracksuit, baseball cap (some even still wear them sideways – form your own opinions!), cheap trainers, Lambert and Butler ciggies, cans of either Carling or – if the Giro hasn’t yet come – Dr Pepper and a look on his face like a buldog chewing a wasp, he looks about as far removed from humanity as you can imagine.

The typical venue for these pieces of filth is – as always – McDonalds but they are also to be seen outside any of the shops in the town hurling abuse at anyone who is black, disabled, old, young, wears glasses, has more than one brain cell, can walk upright or who doesn’t match the above description.

Ilkeston has always been a very racist town, but it has also been a hard-working, hard-playing town full of otherwise decent people who have worked all week, received their pay on a Friday and pissed it all up the wall by Saturday night. What Ilkeston has become over the last few years is a dumping ground of low-life scumbags who have never had and will never get a job, who scrounge off the state churning out babies just fast enough to keep the Giro and the council house. They bite the hands that feed them by ruining the lives of those poor souls (myself included) who actually go to work to pay the taxes that are then given away by this ‘wonderful’ government to these pieces of crap so that they can further increase the population of scumbags.

But, Ilkeston suffers probably most by the fact that it has possibly the worst Council in Britain. Corrupt and useless, the Erewash Borough Council lurch from crisis to crisis, squabbling among themselves, spending money like water on importing more and more low-lifes into Ilkeston from those surrounding areas that they are trying (in vain) to ‘clean up’.

The result of all this? Ilkeston has become – like most of Britain – a drug-infested, chav-ridden, filthy, smelly vile hell-hole of a town where it is not safe to walk the streets in daylight, never mind after dark. Where teenaged mothers with more children than brain cells, leech off the few decent people left. Where you can’t walk up the high street to do some shopping without being abused, vomitted on from a second floor flat window (yes, it realy has happened), having objects thrown at you orbeing knocked over by chavs on ridiculously small bikes hurtling headlong down the hill which is the main street.

If you ride the buses you run the risk of being set on fire by the children in seat behind who have just been let out of the young offenders institution otherwise called Ilkeston School (and yes, that has happened also!), or being so traumatised by the experience that you may never set foot out of the house again.

Please, I beg of you, if you have even the slightest inclination to visit this compost heap of filth and degredation called Ilkeston, DON’T. If there is a place that can be called ‘hell on earth’, this has to be it. My partner and I long for the day when we can not only get out of this town, but this whole country and experience some civilisation again.

Whoa! I must of hit a nerve haha. I never thought that it was that bad whenever I have been past I always thought it was quite nice although it must of been a different place.

Avoid Normanton like the plague. You couldn't pay me to live there, I would rather live in my car.

Mickleover, littleover, some parts of sunnyhill but as it gets closer to sinfin avoid.

Duffield is rather posh and very quick to get into town. Oakwood is OK.

Belper is nice.

Because its feckin' miles FROM Derby and if he's working normal hours in Derby it'll be a 1 hour commute through shitty traffic on A511 to Burton, then A38 and then getting through Derby in rush hour..a ballache of a commute compared to living a couple of mile outside Derby.

Although if using a motorbike then you could do it in 30 minutes possibly.

And I wouldn't bother with Swad either anyway.

Sinfin too, dont.

Never saw the best of the whole place to be honest, working with benefits claimants takes you to the nicest areas.

I have had a look up at some places that have been suggested which are a little further away (such as Swadlincote) and they would be fine in terms of distance for commuting.

I'll cycle most of the time so anything under 15 miles is fine for me. I'll be working at the hospital so no need to go in to the centre either.

I'd suggest against Swadlincote as well as Burton.
A friends of mine used to work at the new hospital in Derby and she lived literally around the corner from it in a load of new-ish builds.

It has its not so great areas but on the whole it is not that bad and there are some decent parts where you are around decent people but benefit from low house prices because of the DE11 postcode.

Lots of brummies who moved there because it's commutable to Brum but benefits from much cheaper housing..ie you can buy a nice 4 bed house on a new estate for the same as a 2 bed house in a shit hole in Brum.

Swad does have this stigma, but mostly by people who don't live there and dont really know what it's like.

There's rough parts of areas wherever you go...but Swadlincote is a LOT better than Burton and the majority of Derbys inner suburbs.

Back on topic though..What a out Hilton? It's becoming a it built up now, but the prices are good and the town is modern with lots of new houses. Facilities a bit sparse though for the size of the town.
