Derbi made a 659cc single for a while, I've never come across one on the road mind so I'm not sure what chance you'll have of tracking one down to buy. I'd almost rather go Chinese!
https://www.motorcyclenews.com/bike-reviews/derbi/mulhacen-659/2006/
KTM Duke was the first thing that sprang to my mind, but I'd expect it to get stolen in about 5 minutes unless it's properly under lock and key at both ends of your journey.
If I was insistent on a big single to commute on I reckon I'd be looking at the BMW F650 but I don't know that they're Euro 3 compliant. ____________________ I am a bellend, I am a man of constant sorrow, I am a gummy bear, I am a rock. |

From various bits, it looks like the rear brake is too grabby, it's just underpowered enough to be noticable, electrics aren't that good, including dash failure. They're also relatively uncommon, which says a thing or two about their appeal. |
Well I don't really use the rear brake, but I don't think it's the issue, the rear just steps out quite easily even when downshifting in a straight line in the dry. Once you're used to it I wouldn't say it's an issue.
Depends what you want the bike for, for motorways etc I can see it being a bit underpowered, but it's not a bad amount of power. A lot of electrical issues were with new bikes, I've heard of things like the tacho going, but as I said not had any issues myself.
They were expensive bikes new (7k iirc), but they're popular and appear to be going up in value. I get a lot of comments/interest in mine. |

Are you really planning to keep the bike that long? |
My thoughts exactly!
Personally, I like the idea of the big single for the road, but the reality is less rosy IME. I've owned a Husqvarna SM610S and a Suzuki DR-Z400SM. Neither model is particularly modern or fantastic, but they were both popular models in their time, especially the Suzuki. I thought they would make excellent commuter bikes, and offer some Winter fun. But after the initial novelty had worn off (very quickly), I found that they were dog slow, unreliable, offered a dismal tank range, were fairly uncomfortable, and had vague, soft suspension.
I haven't ridden one, but the only big single I would consider now is the latest 690 Duke (for the power/weight, road biased suspension, and well developed engine). But at ~£8k, the multi-cylinder competition offers so much better value (MT-07/MT-09/Street Triple).
If you can, I'd recommend that you live with one for a week and decide if it's what you really want. |

I am planning on keeping it that long. Even if I only keep it two years, I'll be selling just before the central London ultra-low emission zone comes into force, which will knacker the value of anything that isn't Euro 3 with range of London.
So far it looks like there aren't that many options. MT03, where the fanboys are M.C. on his first big bike (thank you for your interest, but you do not have enough experience for this role) and SQL. His one caught fire.
Enfield. Tempting in many ways, but my favourite thing about them is reading Stinkwheels long and detailed posts on getting round some of the engineering deficiencies. Possibly not ideal for a daily commuter where need brakes that at least from the 80s.
KTM. Too expensive, looks like it's trying too hard. I don't need a 70hp single, just something where either the frame and chassis are balanced, or the chassis isn't quite good enough for the engine (like most 80s bikes. I like that).
Currently the Mash 400 scrambler is winning because I like the look of it, and I haven't heard of one needing significant re-engineering, or catching fire. |

I tried the MT-03, it seemed okay. I'm not sure how enjoyable it would be day to day. I didn't like that it felt like it ran out of steam quickly, and not much of that punchy low down single feel. Also felt fairly heavy for the power it did have. Would be okay in traffic I think.
Personally I would prefer to have another SM style if I was getting a single, although practicality day to day and desirability factor in your area might be an issue.
I think one of the BMWs might tick more boxes. I had a play on a F650 and liked it.
I've heard good things about the Pegaso, but it uses the same XT based engine as the MT-03, might be weighted better though. ____________________ Previous: GSF600, FZR600 x2, ZXR750, XT600 Tenere, CB125, CZ125, ETZ 250, ER5, CCM R30, DRZ400, RF600x4, RF900x2, GS500, VTR1000F, 640 SMC, CB250 NIGHTHAWK, GT550x3, GPX750 TE610, CB500, X11x2, SV650, ZING 125, TL1000R,CB250 Superdream, CBR1100XX |

I must admit, despite reading the reply, I was thinking that too.
I think you need to use a big single for a bit and see if you really like it; I love my XL for nipping through traffic, it's brilliant at point and squirt up to 30-40, but as soon as the road opens up, it sucks at speeds over 60mph.
OK, more modern stuff will probably be better, but you can't really get over the vibes and lack of top end punch, although you've had a Harley, so you'll be used to it running out of steam fairly early.
I originally bought the XL thinking it would do everything, but it doesn't, which is why it's been relegated to occasional use.
My feeling is, if you have experience of multis, nothing less than two cylinders does a proper all around job, unless you're some kind of masochist. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

I'm fine with using an Enfield as a daily commuter, although it's a fair point that the brakes and tyres require a bit more forward planning. The only thing that's stopped it has been a snapped clutch cable, but that was due to it getting pinched under the tank.
The EFI/UCE models look to have sorted a lot of the issues with the older bikes. I wouldn't rule them out if you enjoy getting back to basics a bit.
To highlight the idiocy of the lizard overlords, mine is a 2008 registered Euro 2 AVL carbed model (with a bigger carb and decatted exhaust), but AFAIK the 2020 charge is going to be applied strictly by registration year. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
