Arguably we only have longer breaks around christmas and easter because of religion, but it's more of a cultural thing now - even Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists or whoever else have always been happy enough with the British school calender. No need to change it now!
Having said that... These new academies that the government wants - I read that they'll have total control over pretty much everything, including timetabling. This pretty much does away with any concept of nationally recognised holidays.
Also it'll cause even more division as we will no doubt see some rather exclusive 'specialist' academies pop up, of which 'Muslim academies' will stand out the greatest. They'll cater perfectly to the needs of the Muslim community who can further cut themselves away from the Great Britain that they're part of.
This is what happens with a government who believe in devolving the running of everything into local private entities. It shows why state control is a must in some areas. Integration doesn't happen if people are left to their own devices. Birds of a feather and all that. |
I'll let Dave know about this as soon as I can. Well done Perky for pointing out this obvious flaw.

It took me a bit to understand it as well, but it's a clever post on the way we have normalised poor treatment of different cultures that have not fully assimilated in to the British mentality.

I particularly liked the trouser stealing at the end, because it is actually quite common for people to pinch the hijab (sp?) off of Muslim ladies.
I'm planning to go live in a Muslim country soon  Feels like a smart idea considering the current European reenactment of the 1930s.

I do think, however, given the current 'situation', that if that American bloke with the pipe bomb were of a different religion and skin colour he would have been treated far differently and torn to pieces by the press.
Innocent until proven guilty, fair trial, treat everyone all the same and all that. One crusading murderous arsehole doesn't necessarily count for all the others of his 'type'. We could just as easily pick out 'white' examples e.g. Anders Breivik or the Boston bombers, to smear all over the white American pipe bomb guy and label him as bigger threat.
We should despise and reject these people all the same, and treat them all the same too. Get caught with a bomb, do X years, blow up a bomb, do Y years, kill someone, do Z years.
I wouldn't mind a system where every crime has the exact same punishment (after fair trial, of course). Then you'd be well aware of how much your immoralities were going to 'cost' before you even did them. None of this 'playing the system' or using your own circumstances to get softer punishments or whatever. |
