I've seen these on eBay and they look about half the price of an air hawk. thought i'd give a seat pad a go for my tour in May to see what difference it makes to those long saddle days.

I don't want to go to the effort or expense of sending my seat off to be padded / re-upholstered or buying one of those horribly expensive custom seats, as I may upgrade after the trip anyway.

I have tried the airhawk seats but didn't like them much tbh, while they do provide a little more comfort they also make you slide around the seat more aswell as increasing the seat height. not tried the tourtec seats but I would imagine they would be pretty similar.

Why do they make you slide around the seat more?
Are they not very secure on the bike?

Being a tall bloke the extra seat height would be welcome and extra comfort is ALWAYS welcome!

The airhawk ones get rave reviews on advrider. I'm too tight to spend £100 on some posh bubblewrap in a fabric bag though

It's just down to the design, your arse moves more under acceleration or braking due to the air transfer through the cells You have to have so little air in them to be effective that you get flat spots where the pressure points of your rear sits, it might be ok for some but i thought for the price it's not worth it. Long motorway journeys maybe but anything else no imo.
If anyone is close to hinckley your free to try one out.

I saw one (air hawk) going second hand on fleabay. Might give it a try if I can get it cheap (I mean who actually wants to sit on another man's arse pad?). I can see how you might slip around, esp on the (more expensive ...) neoprene one. Might try putting a piece of that oxford non-slip stuff around it. I will be doing big miles that trip so I'll need something.

Maybe I'll just dig the medical doughnut out of the attic

I tried sheep skin, made me feel very tall and a little detached from the bike, it also got very wet.

Do they just sling over the seat?

I did with mine, just cut it to size. Some do fit elastic to go under the seat to keep it on. Mine gripped the seat fine as it was, I just felt too tall in the saddle.

Definitely. Reduces drag.
