Hi all!
Just been clearing some shite out and found my xbox 360, PS2 and PS1 consoles and loads of games. Now the question is do I sell them or stuff them away in the attic for 20 years and hope they become valuable. I don't really need the space and for what they are worth on ebay at the minute not worth the money, time and effort selling them.
So what would you guys do?

inb4 play them Thumbs Up

Why not wait 20 years? I have a chipped ps1 and a PSone plus 160 odd games (100 or so are copies) a 2nd gen ps2 plus about 50
games for that, and a couple of ps3's which are still running on my spare tellies and a ps4 on the ultra HD in the living room
(which looks absolutely fantastic graphically speaking). I will be too arthritic to press the buttons by the time I'm
ready to sell that lot but it's the only way to make any money on it. I'm also buying up cheap PS3 and PS2 titles
whenever I see them going for pennies. One day I will cash this lot in, but another 10 years minimum before I start.
PS1 came out in 94 so it's already over 20 years old Laughing

I would sell or donate them.

The PS1 and original Xbox generation of consoles were mass produced to such an extent that you will still be able to buy them for buttons in 20 years time.

They are not like kit of old, Dreamcast and older.

Waste of time storing them in the hope that you will rake in big bucks.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I think I'm just gonna put them in their boxes and put them back in the loft...as soon as I stop playing crash bandicoot haha. Hopefully they will worth a nice amount but I'm not holding out much hope.

PS1 is old than Dreamcast...

Console value depends on rarity.

NES/SNES/N64/Saturn/Dreamcast/NeoGeo/CDO/Anything even weirder will be highly sort after, especially if it has the right accessory/games with it (i.e. the popular ones) Also console addons that were obscure I'm really keen on Getting a 32x but they are ~£200.

MegaDrives aren't worth loads because they are 10 a penny I have a 1 and a 2.

As for games, as a rule of thumb early examples of a good franchise are worth a few quid. Expect to pay £10-£30 for PS1 copies (in good order) of Resident Evil/Final Fantasy/Zelda/Silent Hill/MGS etc. That being said, Sonic/Mario etc. are generally worth fuck all because they are everywhere. Also Iconic games stuff like Shadow of the Colossus are worth a few quid, mainly because it only achieved notoriety later. Sports games are worth fuck all. Platinium/Rereleases are also worth less.

I love retro gaming, I have a Master System Mega Drive/Mega CD Gamecube and PS1/PS2 set up. I do go to a lot of bootsales and you can make money if you look out for titles I mentioned above and the like, especially as people often lump all the games in together, 50p a PS1 game, that's far to much for Fifa 98 but for Final Fantasy 7 you could make 5000% profit. I once bought 45 Sega Cartridges for £12.50 Laughing

some are really rare, for example Hogs of War on the PS1. I was searching for it a few years ago and there was nothing on ebay, markets etc. Might be different now but I'd say keep them. I did the same for a load of PS3 games and averaged about £4 per game. Not worth it really, I wish I'd kept them.

Also early versions of consoles are worth more, the SCPH1002 (I think) the first version of the PS1 in Europe is worth far more than the later ones that removed the component/parallel out etc.

Have ROM websites and emulators not killed the market off?.

I appreciate some titles were rare, but very few were rare AND mainstream, making resell values low (relatively speaking).

I can't see the point, for example, of buying some 80's 8-bit technology, other than an ornament for the man cave.......

Saying that, I played chase hq on an emulator recently. .. twas bants .

Because playing on original Hardware is a better experience, original controllers, original loading even hearing the sony intro or flicking the chunky Mega Drive Switch is what a lot of gamers go for. It's like asking why hasn't spotify killed off the vinyl market.

There are plenty of mainstream titles that command a decent price, have a look at the ones I said about on ebay. FF7 which was the second biggest selling PS1 game still commands £15-20 quid complete.

Ar, The game that took the idea of worms, turned it into 3d and added British voices. Great fun. Also about £4 on steam.

GTA, Ridge Racer, The Need for Speed, Tekken fun memories

I have over 100 Xbox 360 games on disc that I'm not selling because they've cost a lot of money over the years and I could probably only trade them in for tuppence hapenny. I'll keep them, hope that a few are worth daft money in the future and maybe blow the dust of some of the better ones every now and again.
I did sell all my PS2 stuff, got about £45 for my whole collection. Only have the Jak and Daxter series left, so unless somebody realises how truly awesome those games are and offers silly money, I think I'll be keeping those.

The hardware can go for silly prices. The software not so. I collect vintage equipment (Own a 1968 PDP 8) as well as lots of 70's & 80's micro's and they can be worth a fortune. However a games cassette is still 1 pound a go on Ebay. You cant even get a new cassette recorder these days- I know, I've tried. People sometimes collect because they like the box. cartridges are more reliable but take space. I recently was given a CD containing 2000 Spectrum games so I don't have to go through tapes. Most of the classic systems use SD cards now with custom adaptors built by collectors because disks degrade. One SD card can contain everything ever written for systems like the BBC micro, C64 or Speccy and everything is available to download from the web!

Again, I have maybe 100 systems stored in my house and garage and even though packaged well, many fail when brought out of storage for they're first switch on in ten years. Usually capacitors go pop in the power supplies but the boards can corrode, inbuilt Cmos batteries leak, disk and CD drive belts perish and snap.
CD's degrade as well, usually around 20yrs they seem to develop black spots making them unreadable. Cart's can last well if stored properly. Cassettes were not always the best from new and the same with floppy disks.
Who knows what the storage medium will be in the future? But after collecting for the last 25yrs I wonder why I bothered when emulators and replica's can do the same job.

Have you ever tried an old Nes console or Atari 2600 on modern tv's? Most don't even have RF sockets and if they do they don't like the old console's signal and the picture quality is appalling by today's standards. Twenty years from now that will be your composite or Scart socket!
I would say sell now, but write down the titles you enjoyed because you will easily be able to play these in the future at no cost using emulators.

Exclamation Lord Percy socialist extraordinaire steps in to give financial advice to grr666 the ultra-winning capitalist money-making rentier Donald Trump magnate of BCF. World first!

Very Happy

Those gaming titles won't be worth anything for at least 50 years, maybe even a century. Think of CDs and how long they've been around. They're still firmly in the 'cheap tat at markets' phase now.

Consoles might be worth something though.

Also as the above post says, most things are available online now anyway - one thing the internet is great for. I downloaded LSD Dream Simulator yesterday - apparently was a real rarity and major cult classic in its time (not that I knew about it until youtube showed it to me).

I bought 45 Mega Drive/Master System games from a bootsale, all loose catridges all dirty and damp from being kciked around bootsales for yonks, all worked after I cleaned the contacts on them. I've very rearly come across a non working cartridge.

RGB Scart cannot be beaten for video quality on Pre HD consoles, it is the truest video any of those consoles can produce. The connection is not the limit on quality like component or RF.

I did but I only played them for a short amount of time because once I'd figured out WTF Shenmue was, I was hooked. I'd have a break to do some Sonic action but I just bashed Shenmue. Then the second one came out. The Dreamcast. Magic.

It really is. It's so immersive. I may be wrong but IIRC it was the first open world game. If you want, you can just go to the arcade and play some old sega classics within the game, go collecting toys out of those mini egg machines, play darts and pool in the bar or practice martial arts. Don't get me started on driving fork lifts for a living on the docks earning cash money player ...

I've actually backed the kickstarter for them to do the third!
