I've had an Alpinestars Andes jacket and trousers for nearly a year now, and I'm ashamed to say I've never washed them Embarassed

The other night, I had some vape juice in the jacket pocket and it managed to find its way out of the bottle and all over the jacket - and now everything stinks of cinnamon Laughing So - what's the best way to wash them? I've lost the care instructions and there's nothing inside the jacket or trousers to tell me the best way to do it.

I'm assuming the washing machine is a no-no? And I guess I need to re-waterproof it all afterwards?

Any tips would be appreciated.

I used these on my gear. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikwax-Tech-Wash-Direct-Wash-In/dp/B001RE3FLO
It also was a VERY long time until I got around to it Very Happy

Edit
I removed all the armour and liners etc, then washed the jacket and trousers in the machine.

^ This stuff Thumbs Up

Had great results using the "Tech Wash" stuff.

My gear is GORE-TEX, so what I did below worked great, with a decent result.

I washed mine in one of the big plastic storage boxes rather than taking up the sink, then wrung it it out to get the majority of the product off the gear and then hung it up in the airing cupboard for a good 24 hours (making sure it didn't get silly hot in there, but warm enough to get the ambient temperature up a bit).

If you plan on washing the inside of your lid, use baby soap. Lots of people on here will attest to this being a great way to wash your lid and keep it smelling good.

I'll third the Nikwax stuff. My RST trousers are currently going through the machine (they will probably knacker the machine as there is no way to remove the knee armour) and my jacket was done yesterday. Great stuff.

What about leathers? Trousers in particular. Mine have a fabric lining that isn't removable - do they just get more and more woofty as time goes on?

Put in washing machine with "soap flakes". The more pink, grannies and/or babies on the packet, the better.

Wash, drip or cool tumble dry.

If leather, re-gloop with some sort of wax/grease/oil based substance.

Ride.

I washed my two year old Andes jacket using the Nikwax
twin pack. Six months after washing, the jacket looks like new
and is still completely waterproof.

Take out armour and liner. 30ÂșC, non-bio, then leave to drip dry somewhere that's not too hot...

I made the mistake of putting my gear through another couple hundred spins cus I was impatient... stripped most of the high-vis print off ):

Use baby shampoo to wash your helmet lining/padding stuff. Obvs remove them from the helmet first

I handwash my textiles in a big bucket (Mrs.P forbids them going in the machine). Afterwards I plaster them with caravan awning sealant.

^^ Almost, I only do mine about once a year, more frequently with the thermal layer though.

Another Thumbs Up from me for the Nikwax Tech Wash stuff.

I remove all the soap build up in the soap drawer first as I was told it can damage the waterproof membrane and run the machine through an empty wash before I put my textiles in. I then remove the armour and wash the jacket and trousers in a separate wash at 30 degrees.

I then hang them up to drip dry and once dry I spray them with this stuff

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikwax-TX-Direct-Spray-Waterproofer-500ml/dp/B001DKG7XA/ref=sr_1_2?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1450014875&sr=1-2&keywords=nikwax

I've had my textile jacket for 6 years and it's still waterproof.

The waterproofing qualities are down to the plasticky liner not the waterproofing applied to the outside. While it's beneficial to waterproof the outer for it too shed water therefore weight, faster drying etc. it's not the proofer keeping you dry.
Soap flakes to wash tent waterproofer to help shed the water from the outer fabric is a cheaper solution and just as effective.

Steve

Nope, I haven't washed any of my bike gear in years either Laughing. I used to but it just seemed pointless in the end, within a week its back to how it was before. Quick spray of febreeze or deodrant once in a while is all they get now.

Hopefully all the dead skin cells and crystalised sweat adds an additional layer of protection Thinking.

I wash my Rukka roughly twice a year. Take all the armour and any thermal liners out, wash on a gentle cycle with just detergent and no fabric softener. Tumble dry on low heat. That's it. My gear is about three years old and still no leaks.

I wash the soft stuff in my helmet about once a year, or if they get particularly smelly ( I.e., after a hot spell). Take all the cushions and liners out, put them in a pillow case, tie the top and throw them in with a load of laundry. Air dry.

Washing machine on the hand-wash cycle with regular washing powder. IMO re-waterproofing is not needed strictly because your Drystar material is what makes it waterproof and as far I am aware handwashing Drystar is fine and I am not sure that Nikwax will do any help of restoring any lost waterproof qualities for it.

Drystar is a special textile similar to Gore-tex. NikWax is a water repellent. I know NikWax are advertising that you can use NikWax on Gore-tex however I will take that with a pinch of salt. The best thing that can happen is if you try re-waterpoofing breathable textile waterproof is to clog the material and loose breathability.

Here what Rukka say about that:

https://www.rukka.com/motorsport/product-care

I do have used NikWax previously on a cheap textile gear which was waterproofed. That make sense. If it was previously treated with water repellent to treat it again. Does not make sense to use water repellent on a jacket that has completely different system for waterproofing.

Here is NikWax explanation which does not make any sense because the claim that all textile have water repellent too is not true, my Gore-tex membrane textiles for example does not have it: https://www.nikwax.com/usblog/how-to-wash-your-gore-tex-rain-jacket/

I will not use it on my Gore-tex gear. As far I know your textiles use Drystar which is high quality Alpinestars material similar to it. Cheap Alpinestars WP textiles line like Jaws use water repellent and will need NikWax.

Pinkyfloyd The Liner Zips out around the Waist and the Bottom of the legs are held in with Buttons and Elastic Loops Take out the Liner and turn the Legs outside in and you will find a Velcro Strip Open that and slide out the Knee Armour.

Tech wash and then the wash in waterproofing stuff from the same range. Worked wonders on my HG jacket. Importantly the outer was getting waterlogged which was causing me to get really cold. A wet outer layer makes you fucking cold.

My textiles get pretty grim after a few winters so I put them in the bath with washing machine juice and warm water.

Mix it around a bit, let it soak, rinse with the shower then hang in the sun. You could take the armour out first but I don't bother.

The water is minging afterwards:

Detergent shouldn't be used on Goretex as it leaves a film on the fabric. Loads of information on how to wash waterproof gear on outdoor and hillwalking forums.

Only pure soap flakes (Grannies will do, but it's hard to get now) or Techwash.
