Anyone have experience with re-packing exhausts? failed its MOT due to "excessive noise and degradation" so I figured I'd repack it. Simple, right? Wrong.

The packing is so charred it won't come out. I tried to get the bottom part off to make it easier for the packing to slide out but it wouldn't come off even after dousing it in WD40 and whacking it with a piece of metal pipe and a hammer from the inside.

The bottom bit I mean is in the picture. Does anybody know if it's supposed to come off or have any other ideas?

Yes, you are going to need a drill, rivet tool, rivets and the insulation wool. Drill out the rivets, take the muffler appart, clean it, stuff in as much as wool as you can, put it back together, use the rivet tool.

Sometimes it is sufficient, when you drill out (open) only one side of the exhaust, but other times it needs to be drilled (opened) on both sides.

*wool = I'm not sure it's called like that in your country.

Hi Rhyno, thanks for the reply

My one doesn't have rivets unfortunately, just the three bolt holes you can see in the picture

Ah, I see, well then get a screwdriver and start digging, I guess. Razz

EDIT: If you don't want to bother, just buy a new silencer. Those are rather cheap.

Find a friendlier MoT tester or a new exhaust. Thumbs Up

would quite like to fix it and put it back on, as it's a after market exhaust for a rxs 100, quite rare apparently

that little ring with the three bolt holes looks like it should just pop out... what do you guys reckon? could be welded on there and I've just spent half an hour whacking it for no reason Laughing

Put a legal one on for MoT then take it off.

If I failed an MOT for my bike being to loud, they'd lose my custom permanently.

It's a funny business getting MOTs. Seems to be a lot of grey areas and dependence on the tester (or his mood that day!)
