Dont be too hard on yourself, it happens and in real life you'd have slotted in after a while and not really caused any issue (unless you were going really slowly ). The more important thing is that you know that provided you don't do that next time, you're in great shape for a clean pass!
I failed my mod2 for waiting in a queue and not riding up the bus lane to my left to take the left turn at the end of the road. Middle of the day and the bus lane was open for cars and I never spotted it - major fault
The other one my instructor and I disagreed on was at a roundabout with two lanes, left marked straight on and left, right marked straight on and right, two lanes going straight on, you approach the rounabout in the right lane with traffic in the left. The front three cars turn left. I exited the roundabout holding my lane, into the right lane of the dual carriageway, then did my checks and pulled into the left lane. He reckoned I should have "exited the roundabout in the left lane where possible" - possibly true but even now I'd far rather avoid changing lanes on a roundabout, just more scope for confusion. |

I can't talk too much about advanced training since I haven't done any but to my understanding from videos I've watched the safest way to take a roundabout is the most direct approach from your entry point to the exit you wish to take. In the case of going straight ahead that would be ignoring all lane markings and literally just traveling in a straight line thus reducing time spent on the roundabout and being exposed to danger. I'd also be of the realization that the actual amount of times you get to do that would be limited to zero unless night time riding and or little traffic. Again I haven't done any advanced training so feel free to adjust where appropriate for accuracy.
Anyway, OP.. lets not confuse you or this topic.
On the test and unless the instructor tells you otherwise go straight ahead at every roundabout and stay in lane 1 at all times unless;
1) road markings direct you otherwise
2) road signs direct you otherwise
3) there's a hazard ahead
I'm sure there's more but that's just to get the basics out the way.

They told you not using a bus lane was a major i.e insta-fail? Thought it'd just be a minor for lack of progress? Could be wrong. |
I cant recall which box it fell into but yes, it was a major fault and thus a failure.
With regards to the roundabout thing, from when I learned to drive until now, on cars, bikes or anything else, I navigate roundabouts according to the lane I enter them in as a fairly hard rule. MUCH less ambiguous to save the lane change for later if I have to make it, but generally if Im slow moving (trailer etc) ill be in the left lane anyway, so it's rarely an issue. I just cant see any logic in adding confusion to a busy roundabout situation by trying to change lanes on the roundabout.
TBH, even if I end up in the wrong lane for where I want to go, I'll tend to commit to it, take the matching exit, then re-route later, or turn around down the road and come back, nothing worse than indecision/dawdlers/random indicators on roundabouts! |

Nah, OP, I failed my car test, after this kind of conversation.
Examiner: Do you realize what you've just done wrong?
Me: Nope.
Examiner: You should have given the way to vehicles going from the right at the intersection.
Me: But there were none.
Examiner: You didn't even look (I have), and I don't care.
Me: Well,
Examiner: I can't let you get the licence at this conditions. Giving the way is the most important rule on the road (I agree).
The road was empty and even a one-direction only, so legally speaking, I couldn't even get in a position where I would be obligated to the a way. Well, I was a kid and the examiner was the god, on a slightly above avg. wage, so he must have been right. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ
