seriously crap internet speeds and streaming stuff

Ive just binned Sky and was looking to change to a decent programme package. I was interested in Amazon Prime and the telly bit but as we live in an area where there are just six houses, Open Reach have no interest in bringing us superfast broadband and its like a sloth on mogadon. I am presuming I will not be able to stream stuff.

Im pretty dense when it comes to the internet and things like freeview etc so any advice would be much appreciated.

If it helps, you can download stuff from Amazon and watch it later (at least you can on Android tablets, which is how I use it, I presume you can on other clients)- so you could queue up a load of programmes to download overnight or whilst you are out during the day and have them ready to watch with no buffering when you are in. You can also pause downloads in progress, so if they haven't finished you aren't chewing up all your browsing bandwidth on downloads.

I'm lucky in having full speed fibre, but it's useful for when I'm away from home (stuck in a hotel or whatever).

For reference, a 1hr programme is about a 250 - 450MB download looking at the ones I've currently got stored.

Hmm, I'm the opposite, been waiting for years for fibre and just had it installed with Sky and getting speeds of around 90mbit down and 20mbit up, which is pretty sweet.

However, until they upgraded the exchange, I was stuck with only ADSL as the option, Virgin never did the street (only 5 houses) and had no interest.

What's your average line speed according to Sky on their website?

To be fair, my ADSL was lightening fast at 22mb down but shit upload at 1mb up. Living about 500ft from the exchange really helps but I waited long enough to get fibre, about 6 years after most places.

You heard of B4RN? Only available oop north but those guys are pushing 1gbit/s speeds with their own network.

If you have about 2.0mps or over the world of $ky card sharing is open to you.

This is where you buy a new satellite receiver and subscribe to a slightly dodgy service where a nice person shares his $ky decrypt card with you (and a hundred other people) so you can watch all the channels he subscribes to, which is usually all of them. You actually get all of the picture straight from the satellite dish, only the decrypt comes from the internet, hence it works (mostly) with the slower net speeds

On the plus side, this subscription costs 30-40 quid a year and the receiver about the same to buy outright.
On the down side the legalities of it all are dubious at best and is tantamount to stealing complan from Mr Murdochs toothless mouth.
Due to technical issues only Standard Definition is available so no HD. Oh and of course no warranty on the service although i hear the nice ones do help with support and setup via email.

A quick look on Ebay or Amazon for someone selling "openbox free gift" or "skybox free gift" will see you right, or you can just buy an openbox or skybox and source you own share provider..

I, of course have nothing to do with any of it and wouldnt dream of buying anything from these morally corrupt people...

Have you considered learning how to torrent? Using a raspberry pi it would cost next to nothing to start up and very little to run.

No minimum line speed required. Do be careful though, some people put copyrighted material online!

Cancelled Sky a few months ago and called them to verify my final bill on my last day, they offered me free tv (no contract) free internet and £100 credit! I was more than happy to accept.

If decent speeds are not available in your area I would echo i1301243's suggestion to learn torrenting. It's not hard and it's so bloody wonderful that it's positively life-changing

If your ISP blocks torrent sites you can just go via one of the many alternative routes such as https://ispunblock.com/. You need to install a torrenting app such as uTorrent, which is what I use. If you install it, remember to deselect the free software which comes with it. (If you don't, it's no biggie, you just have a little clean-up job to do.)

If you torrent you're bound to end up with some adware or spyware or something, but doing a cleanup is piss easy and costs nothing, and it teaches you a lot about internet security.

I torrent everything. File sizes vary, but I can generally download more than an hours worth of tv in less than an hour. Unless it's using some stupid encoder that makes it balloon in size.

I would also like to counter the above mention of their being any copyrighted material on there. I'm certainly not aware of any.
