Anyone got recommendations? Leaving Le Mans the morning of 9th and got a day or two to get down to Andorra. I've never been but I assume La Rochelle might be a bit crowded / pricy / touristy??? Any ideas of places to stay / see?

We're heading to the Pyrenees in May and our first stop after getting off the boat is La Rochelle. We were there many years ago and while it wasn't particularly cheap it was a good place for an overnighter. Was fairly busy/ touristy.

Did that last year. 2 up, so shorter days. 200 mile days off the autoroutes. Stayed a night at Chauvigny and another at Monpazier in the Dordogne. No sense in rushing through a beautiful country. T'was brilliant. Then a week in the Pyrenees and back via Bilbao. Our 65th birthday present to each other.

La Rochelle is one of my favourite places, there are a couple of Ibis that are not too expensive. The restaurants and bars along the quay are great.
I would not ever pass it by if I were in the area which I will be later this year.

I like it there too. Ate at a few of those little places and all is good. Stayed in a gite in the middle of a little village but wouldn't recommend. Would prefer to stay in and around LaRochelle itself which I really like.

Will be there 27th May then down into Pyrenees and zig zag to Barcelona for motogp Cool
Royan isn't far from La Rochelle. Me and the wife had an overnighter there a couple of years ago and got a knock back from a restaurant which I found a bit bizarre. La Rochelle from what I remember is much better.

I liked the old town when I visited but it was heaving with tourists (and to be fair I'd had an argument earlier that morning with a traffic copper about doing 'quatre-vingt-dix'mph on a 90kmh road. I did win but he thought me an ignorant Englishman)

As for a repeat trip, I rather pay for the services of Itchy's girlfriend Shocked

I first worked in France back in 1990 and visited the country for at least a week annually for about the next 15 years, La Rochelle left it's impression as having the most traffic police I'd ever seen in France, they were bloody everywhere! (We were staying about 30 miles East of the town)

What about Ile de Re, anyone been there? Worth staying there or just pottering over the next morning?
