Hello bikers,

I've finally decided to get myself a full A license. I hold a full car driving license (category B), do I still need to apply for a provisional A license?

Also, do I still need to take the full motorcycle tests (theory+practical) or just the practical test (as it happens in other countries for example India, Italy, etc.)?

Finally, do you have any specific advice on study material (books, online-resources, etc etc)?

Thanks a lot,
Mauro

Your full Cat B licence is your provisional for bikes,

You'll need to do your CBT to activate it and ride with L plates (no pillion and no motorways)

You'll then need to do your motorbike theory before doing your tests to ride anything more than a 125cc and loose your L plates.

Does it say you have provisional A?

Nobody who matters is going to check anywhere else.

Do your CBT then we'll talk more.

Hello Mauro and welcome.

As already said you already have provisional A, you need to do full motorcycle tests (theory+practical).

You also need to be over 24 in order to get full A unrestricted license.

In the UK there is a training called CBT you need to do before that.

Find good motorcycle training school. You can do CBT and all training and practice tests except theory test with the school. The training and the tests can be done in one week (4-8 training days total) with good school. It can cost you about £600-£1200 depending on how many days you need to train. Some people are natural. Some need more time.

Since you have provisional A license you can book and do theory test yourself anytime you want before the training.

Theory test in the UK has 2 parts:

multiple choice part
hazard perception part

This one will prepare you for both:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Motorcycle-Theory-Hazard-Perception/dp/1843265982/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1459641093&sr=8-1&keywords=motorcycle+theory+test

Finally if you are based in South East or London train with Nikos and Sofia:

https://www.exceleratemtc.co.uk/

Do not take my word for it read their google reviews Very Happy

Thanks to everybody for the very helpful info!!!

There is something I've haven't fully understood. I understand that after the CBT I can drive a 125 with the L plate. But I want to go for something higher than a 125cc, should I wait to pass the theory tests or should I wait till I pass the practice exams?

Thanks again to everybody!!

Cheers,
Mauro

You have to pass:
Theory.
Mod 1
Mod 2
before you can ride anything bigger than a 125cc.

How old are you?

Ouch! Can I do the Mod 1 and Mod 2 with my own motorbike? If positive, I should buy myself a 125cc and sell it after I get the full license! :-/ I would've preferred to start with my dream-motorbike (Honda CBR) Smile Ah, well...

Fortunately (in this case only) I'm old enough Smile I passed my driving test for the B license back in 1996, so technically I'm not even obliged to do the CBT. I'm doing it anyway - tho.

The Mod 1 and 2 must be done with big bike in order to get big bike full A license. If you use 125 for the Mod 1 & 2 they will give you restricted A1 license for bikes limited to 125. The law is the same for all of Europe including Italy.

You can buy a big bike and try to do Mod 1 and 2 with it.

See list of bikes that qualify. Note choose A from the dropdown: https://www.dft.gov.uk/motorcycle-test-vehicle-list/

Having said that its tricky. You are not allowed the ride the big bike on your own on the public roads without accompanied by certified instructor. Means the bike must be delivered to the test center by your friend or a trailer. Also the bike must have valid insurance for the tests. Good luck with that. Because of that you also cannot train for Mod 1 and 2 on your big bike, because you are not allowed to ride it before you have license without accompanied by instructor on public roads. Unless you live in a stately home with your own private roads you can't train.

Realistically will be easier to bite the bullet and pay for school training and bike.

What makes you think that?

I'm not seeing the word "moped" anywhere in the thread.

Grumpy Scot translation: you can only ride a moped (so 50cc) with 'grandad rights', having obtained your car license before 2001, without the need for L plates or a CBT certificate.

For anything bigger you need a valid CBT, L plates, no pillions or motorways etc.

Cantankerous.

As above, unless you're planning on getting a 50cc moped, you'll need to do a CBT. Rules is rules.

I'm not trying to break the rules, I'm just trying to understand what the rules are. I was doing a CBT anyway, regardless whether or not is mandatory. If it is mandatory as it seems to be, my bad, but it won't change anything, as I booked the CBT way before I started this topic Shocked

easiest route to a full license is speak to a bike training school and start revising your theory test and take the bike theory test.

the bike training school should put you through your CBT (probably on a 125cc) and start preparing you for the tests, at some point they'll move you onto a bigger bike for you to get ready to take the tests on the big bike.

The CBT allows you to ride a 125cc on L plates unaccompanied

it also allows you to ride on any bike provided you are under supervision of a qualified instructor.

Thank you very much (once again), this is indeed a very wise advice. Too bad I've already booked a CBT without thinking prospectively to the full A license, I would've picked one closer to my place.
