After a period of time off the road, I now need to get my leathers serviced.

Where, or what is the best place to get this done? both of my sets of leathers are over 10yrs old now, and have been in the shed/attic/cupboard for most of this time. I have been to a couple of dry cleaners whom have quoted me around £120 for them to be done.

What do you guys do?

I'd probably just get a 'new' second hand set if you're considering paying near to those quotes.

Used this horse-saddle soap and some Gliptone Liquid Leather stuff on an old set years ago but it didn't really seem worth the effort in the end. I just wipe them down with a wet-wipe if they get fly-splatted and leave them alone now days.

Gold label saddle soap.
NikWax leather conditioner waterproofer.

My winter leather jacket is, err, 30 yrs old. It was my dads old jacket when I learnt to ride almost 20 years ago. It hasn't been in constant use but still cleans up really well.
I really should treat myself to new winter jacket.

Jay clothe + warm water on the leather (removable lining in the wash).

Once air dryed, rub a load of this honey + oil mixture into it, takes me about 40mins to do my jacket.

The thing is soaked in it and stinks of honey.

Before I did it for the first time the leather was dry, grey and cracking. It soaked in and dried in about 2 hours. Now it takes 48 hours to dry enough to use it. But it's still quite tacky a week later.

On the plus side, it's a little waterproof, I like the smell, the jacket is mega supple and looks new (its 5 years old and used every day).

I re-do it every 10 weeks roughly, more in the winter, less in the summer.

£7 for 12-18mths worth

That said, having seen HT's post, thing I'll try that next.

Soaks in quickly and non sticky, unfortunately no sweet smell of honey.

I normally insert a smutty innuendo ridden piece of filth but I think my work is already done.

The leather panels may be fine but the weak point is the stitching.

Or they may be single stitched and un-protected stitching. Newer leather offer far superior protection than the ten year old stuff.

I clean my own leather gear with Nikwax products. Not too much of a phaph and it cost less than a specialist

Proper stitching with synthetic thread has been around for ages. The armour inserts have changed far more - in the early '90s the best stuff was two layer foam and pretty rigid, now we have D30 and other flexible inserts that offer better protection and way more comfort.
If he's got good quality 10 year old leathers there won't be huge safety gains in buying new, and you can still buy new stuff that's badly made.

I'd give 'em a clean up with one of the suggestions above and see how they go.

There are loads of different two-stage leather cleaning/conditioning kits out there.

Some specifically for bike leathers. Some specifically for car seats. Some for neither or both.

I use Muc Off at the moment, only because someone gave me a kit for Christmas a few years ago. Can't fault them tbh.

They turned my white A*s boots white again, and they had some pretty horrid greasy oil marks on them.

Cheers, they are a set of spool leathers, paid around £600 for them. Will try some of the treatments mentioned.

Tah.

Belvior tack cleaner if dirtier than a wipe with a damp cloth will sort. Then either belvior's leather conditioning soap (for shiny leather) or brecknell turner matt finish conditioning soap (from carr day and martin, alternative brand to belvior) works on horse kit, reenactment leatherwork and bike kit. Requires a little patience and elbow grease. Not for analine leathers.

After wiping over with fragrance-free baby wipes (though I have been know to use the shower head in the bath to give them a good soaking and get rid of road salt etc. before allowing to dry naturally) I use Carr & Day & Martin Belvoir Leather Balsam intensive conditioner. According to the royal warrant on the lid the Queen uses this for her leathers too. Anyway, it does a nice job (beeswax and lanolin), but absolutely stinks and not in a good leathery way. Having used it on my jacket this morning, it is hung up in the garage whilst the niff goes away a bit so it'll be OK for commuting on Monday without upsetting my cow-orkers.

The stuff I use on car seats (Gliptone, IIRC) on the other hand smells lovely and leathery.

Not used the intensive conditioner. The conditioning soap is less stinky. It's probably the case that you dont need to use the intensive conditioner that often. My rst touring jacket is supple and showerproof though.
