Has anyone renewed their driving license and found that categories they were previously entitled to had disappeared? I've heard this happening to people on a number of occasions and as I'm due to renew my license soon was wondering if anyone had experience of this. Is it true, that once the category has been wiped, there's no chance of getting it reinstated and you'll need to do the relevant test again - even if you have photographic evidence that you do qualify for that category?

One would hope that thanks to the introduction of the online system, this shouldn't be as common to occur. I renewed mine online recently. I directed them to take the picture from my Passport that they have a record of and it went very smoothly with no complaints at all.

Check the online record now to make sure that all what you expect to be there is, and go from there.

'Lose' it and just get a replacement licence, then if you find the new one has missing stuff you can 'find' the lost one
again and contest it. I'm not sure they accept photographs as evidence. I think it's original documents only like your test
pass cert or old licence. It's what I may have done last time I sent my licence in for a new photograph.

When a friend of mine went to get his first photocard licence, he was told he had never held a licence despite it being physically infront of them and passed his test in 1978. He had even had a few speeding tickets over the years but still his licence number was not recognised at the DVLA. They sorted it- took six months. They told him he could drive his own car but the company we work for was not allowed to let him drive until his new card arrived. No apologies offered though.

yes people have lost A entitlement and had to retake the test

apparently DVLA will now return original IF ASKED

Quote:
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) will now be returning original driving licences (with an invalidating hole punched through the photo) to motorcyclists who request a replacement licence. But not automatically.

You have to request that your old licence is returned. The new procedure has been introduced because a number of motorcyclists had been issued with replacement licences (after moving house or applying for a photo licence) that had ‘lost’ their motorcycle entitlement resulting in them having to retake their bike test simply because they were unable to prove they’d previously held entitlements.

You don't have to send the old one in if you renew on line. It's a bit unclear as they say you can't hold two driving licences at once. Oh yes you can, I have both old and new.

yeh we moved house last November, we still had the green paper only licence, renewed online (they use your passport photo) tell you to destroy old licence (aye right), so yes I have old, old and new, new.

I've kept each one. One had the points removed, my insurers got that one. Laughing

Some good reading here from DVLA who deny any wrongdoing on their part whatsoever ...

https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/removal_of_entitlements_and_lack

Only to be proved wrong here:

https://www.theguardian.com/money/2015/jun/20/licence-revoked-dvla-errors-drivers-stripped-entitlements

I'll definitely being renewing online and keeping a copy now. Really don't want to have to do any more tests. It appears that anyone who passed their test prior to 1997 is at risk.

Every driving licence has a 2 digit issue number on the right next to your driver number on the photocard, with the number increasing every time you get a new one, so plod etc can tell if your using your current one. so I do wonder if insurance companies have access to find out if the details of the licence you supplied is correct

The photocard is really just an ID now. It's still you, and it's got enough details for them to get your current entitlements from Friend Computer.

Worst case "Oh, is that my old copy? I thought I'd lost it, and here it was in my wallet all the time," and you get a producer. Can't see why they'd even bother though unless they're being right Constables.

I have a copy of my photocard in my wallet, and I couldn't even tell you if it's the latest one. How would I check?

Never happened to me but I am with the people that conveniently "lose" their licence any time I need to replace/change something. The small fee is nothing in comparison to the hassle of losing my entitlements and having to retake all my tests again. Thumbs Up.

There's nothing extra to pay, you just tick a box. Why anyone would ever surrender a license is beyond me.

Education for the ignorant please...
What on earth is a "Producer"?
I know the definition in regards to the Arts and Entertainment industry, but somehow I'm thinking this isn't related to Broadway. Thinking

Four plus counterpart we were supposed to shred plus original pass certificates plus all my original CBTs back to when I took my first one at 16 years old.

With bureaucracy, especially government bureaucracy, always approach it with the attitude 'if it all went to pot, what physical evidence would I need in order to prove my current situation'.

If I ever had an entitlement go walkies I wouldn't even feel comfortable mailing back my original pass certs, in case they got lost too.

Produce your license and/or insurance certificate and/or MOT at a police station within 7 days, or terrrrrible consequences.

There's no real need in this day and age as Friend Computer holds the definitive information anyway.
