Posted: 23:42 - 04 Apr 2016 Post subject: Will PSU die if shoved in my PC? |
 |
|
I have had 3 PSU's die in this case, all have been Chinese but increasing in power, the 2nd one was probably caused by me overvolting and clocking my GPU. The one which is in there at the moment made funny noises for a few days, smelt a bit funny then went.
I'm now going to invest in a decent power supply but want to know if it will die because of my poor air flow, I want to get a bigger case so I can fit 2 770's in it, have PSU at bottom and get a better airflow (more fans on front). It is hard to find full towers as most of them are mid. Also don't want to spend 100 pound on a case when it's just a few metal sheets really and I could buy an almax or cylinder / rad for my NSR or the 2nd 770.

Would a PSU die in there? Shall I buy a 2nd hand PSU or a new one with a warranty?
I understand they blow the hot air away, being at the top and not much of an exhaust I assume the heat traps and things melt.
edit: I think the 2nd was 750 watts and lasted about 6 months, the 3rd was 850 and lasted the same, have been looking at the rm1000i on amazon or want to win an auction on something on ebay. I probably don't need that power cause no titan but maybe someday. |

I don't see why it would.
Just remember, PC cooling is ALWAYS about airFLOW and not just about the fans you have.
It looks like you have a AIO water cooler for your cpu. They recommend you fit the fan pulling air IN to get the coolest air over the rad. That's all very well, but your fan at the front of your case will most likely be pulling air in as well.
This is possibly causing your overheating problem if that's indeed the cause as there's no where for the air to go.
I have a similar setup but I have a decent bit-fenix case so my psu is at the bottom of the case with plenty of room and I have a 3rd fan on the top blowing air back out (my water cooler and front fan pull air in as yours probably does) - the heat my top fan pulls out is incredible. When the cpu is at all whack the rad can get quite hot but my cpu rarely even breaks 35 degrees
I can't see the top of your case but are you able to do similar? Or failing that perhaps cut and mount one on your side panel maybe?
I'm just throwing ideas, guessing on what you've said. I can't tell you anything for sure.. best thing to do is download a program called 'speccy'. Bootup and run that. It'll tell you the temps of all your devices (hdds, gpu, etc..) and play with different fan setups to find what works out the best.

I haven't looked inside my PC for quite a while.... so you'll have to excuse all the dust, but this is inside mine:

I believe the PSU came with the case (brand new) for about £45, although looking on ebay they are now around £88 but then I've had that for about 3 years now.
My spare PC was only missing the PSU after I thought it was faulty.... turns out it was the reset button.... but I ended up just buying a 500w PSU for £20 and it still hasn't blown up |
